Topping Autoflowers - why and how

Topping an autoflower is a choice. If you have the room and height to let her grow then the choice is yours. If, like me you have vertical restrictions then you might want to consider topping. There are many threads in AFN about topping (@autobeast is one of them) but I just thought a quick demonstration with the results after a week would give first timers the confidence to give it a go. When ever and where ever you top the plant will give you different results. Each set of large leaves off the main stem will produce a side branch that will turn into a small cola, this is called the node. The more light this cola gets, the bigger it gets but never usually as big as the main central cola. If you top the plant, the main cola is removed but the plant then thinks it is damaged and all the smaller colas then start to develop more quickly to try and get above the canopy of the plant and take the place of the main cola. The result is many main colas that are slightly smaller than the original cola would have been.
How many colas you get depends on which node you cut above. The lowest two leaves produce the smallest and weakest of these colas and (in my experience) with LST these almost never catch up to the rest. If each node produces two colas then for every node below where you top you will have 2x the number of nodes left on the stem. I top at the 5th node which gives me 10 main colas. Some top at 4 and some at 6. I have found the more colas you have the smaller each cola is likely to be.
Once you decide or try different ones to suit yourself, allow the plant to grow enough above the node so you can get your cutting implement of choice in the space with out damaging the rest of the plant. Then simply cut the top off. My plants stall for a day then off they go again. I will update this page with one I did 12hrs ago with 12 hour spacing photos for a week so you can see the progress.
Below is a series of pictures showing the topping process.

Nice thread @Rollin_along great to see the pics accompany the text in the thread. I have topped some of my plants in the past just to observe how they react, I just pinchef the top off the plant. It seemed to work well. I have a very small area to farm and must maintain a very stealth environment so, I'm always looking for grow hacks! Thanks for posting!

Great read @Rollin_along :chimp:

I am going to try this on my Blue Monkey that is supposed to be a tall gurl. Thanks, Dude! :goauto:

Thanks, hoping to give a bit of confidence to peeps. Might want to try some LST too if you are short on height.

Many thanks for your prompt reply....I've had a good read of your perp. thread and I'm going to do the same now I have got my indoor set-up ready to go. 2 small points .....
* For topping at node 5, do you count the cotyledon leaves as node 1 ?
* Approx how much water does your seed sit in for germ.....I want to try the 1/8 aspirin method but dont want to overdose.
Cheers
Sorry I missed this I just glug some water in usually about an inch deep, the deeper it is the harder the seed is to catch lol I count the first set of leaves if the shoots from them look viable, if they look runty and small, I don't count them. Depends on the strain and luck but they usually never catch up to the same height as the others.

So do you have 10 colas?

And are they all the same height roughly? There is no dominate cola in the middle now right? All 9 or 10 of them are equals right?

I ended up with 10 but 7 were dominant. The others struggled to catch up but still good size buds. The 7 were roughly the same height.

Did you combine the topping with any LST bending of branches to open them up for air and light to get in? Or just topped and leaf tucking?

I just topped and left it, but it was a shorter plant about 600mm or 24" tall. I have some tall ones where I LST early and then topped as normal.
