Surfactants....surface acting agents....have been in use for eons to 'soften' soils which allows root systems to uptake more of the nutrients available. Be assured that ph is important so ya don't lock things up.....Three tricks I used on my yard were a cheap dishwashing liquid to 'wet' the soil, household ammonia for instant feed and beer (to reduce thatch)....Soap & ammonia are in my stable of weed ammendments too.....A good time to use a lil soap in ya water is when ya notice ya soil 'lift's or floats a bit when ya water....couple drops of dishwashing soap corrects it immediately....
