Yeah i am not a fan of peat pots as well....takes too much effort for the roots to penetrate.

Mine are similar to these, but I use a Caulking tube instead of pcv and cheap paper towels (the narrow size. not the full size sheets) and I don't fold the paper in half. I think paper towels used to dry your hands in public washrooms would be even better because they break down so easily.

Once I get going, I can make two a minute. I make 500 on a saturday with someone helping me.

At three weeks, the roots hold everything together nicely and they're easy to transport in these boxes. Get them free from the grocery store.
