Hey everyone, I had a good amount of trim sitting for awhile and finally decide to go after it and make some hash. In the past I've always used bubble bags, which definitely works, but I find the process to be very time consuming, messy, and not always happy with the yields (plus if you've ever used an 8-bag system, you know what a BEAST those last two fine-micron filters are in terms of waiting for them to drain!)
So I found @Grim Reefer guide on making dry ice hash, I've seen multiple guys do it in the past (using those INCREDIBLY expensive bubble bowls) and the results were just amazing, and now that I've seen it done, I honestly don't think I'll ever do hash runs any other way.
Speaking on those bubble bowls, absolutely not knocking them (aside from price) especially since I haven't used them, but after using bubble bags on a 4 gallon square bucket, it seems there's a VERY low-cost alternative that works just as well.
But hey, talk is cheap. So let me SHOW you. I took pictures chronically the adventure and I'll throw in my "tips/observations" at the end for things that I personally am going to try different next time (and maybe if some experienced fellas have any advice, they would be more than welcome to chime in!)
First I prepared my area for the sifting. I used a glass insert from one of my coffee tables to catch the kief. I had this grand idea that I would use the rubber mallet to smack the bucket, hoping the vibration would help shake the kief. That... just didn't work
At all. But hey, any roving fingers heading towards the hash pile would be in peril of a good smashing, that's for sure!
Here are the bubble bags (iPower brand, around $30 shipping included on Amazon for an 8 bag set.)
Here's the trim I used. Mix of big fan leaves, leaves dropped off the plant, sugar trim, and the jar is full of airy/larfy buds I didn't want to smoke.
The bucket used is about 4 gallons and square. I found the square buckets to be the EASIEST to use 5 gallon bubble bags on, they fit very well and you don't run into the material binding on the top bucket lip (like sometimes happens on the round 5 gallon buckets.)
I filled the 4 gallon bucket up about 1/2 way with the recently frozen trim, so it's about 2 gallons worth of plant material.
