has anyone out there ever done a stealth grow in a chest of drawers??
Come June i'm going to lose my grow space due to the birth of my 2nd child and i've been scratching my head thinking how i can get round it.
Then suddenly this comes along

I've got an idea to take the fronts off the drawers and fix them to some sort of hinged door so it will swing open. Trouble is i'm worse than bad at that sort of thing, so if anyone has any experience or ideas - i'm all ears

If it were me, I would take the the fronts off of the drawers like you said. But instead of putting hinges on them, I would liquid nail them to the face of the chest. Then if you could pop the back off without damaging it, you could then take the nails out of it and put hinges on that for a door. If the back is attached to the top you will not be able to do this. Then you need to cut the back off from the sides in order for your new door to close flush to the walls of the chest (if you are not that handy with a saw, I would practice ripping pieces with the scrap wood from the drawers before you start hacking your chest to pieces). They sell cabinet latches that screw into the inside to hold it closed.

You will need to attach a bottom to the chest also. For this, I would also use the scrap wood from the drawers (you will have a gap on all sides of the base, but that will not matter because it is sitting on the floor anyways). Using L brackets attach the the floor to the bottom of the chest on all sides.

If you want ventilation, that part is easy. They sell great little computer fans at radio shack. (if you don't have a RS you can find a fan online. Just look for ones with higher cfm ratings.) You can buy a hole saw that attaches to any hand held screw gun and cut the hole in the back and towards the top for your exhaust(you will probably have to make a couple conjoined holes with this to get the desired diameter.) Just remember to make the hole about 1/8 inch smaller on all sides so you can liquid nail the fan to the back. To kill the smell, they sell small filters at wallyworld that have carbon in them just take 2, overlap and tape them to the outside of the fan (box tape works really well for this). Then all you have to do it cut a hole in the bottom for your intake (make sure the bottom hole is at least 1/4 smaller than the top hole. This will cause you to have suction at any points on the chest that are not sealed.) ONA gel works well in conjunction with the filters.

You will have to pull the chest out any time you want to open it but it will be stealthy as can be. Hope this helps and if you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a private message and I will help you out.

Thanks guys. Morning Wiz. (Damn it.. almost called you mosser again. You would think that I would be used to the name change by now.) I think we will hit 200 much faster than it took to get to 100. There is no way you could deny this site with all the great info here along with good vibes. :pimp:

morning m8's! one tip to add to HBS's great walk-through... look for fans with higher cfms and low dba... soundswise you dont want a fan that gives away the hidden concept. I have a 2.5 sona bathroom exhaust fan in my closet... very quiet... sonas are a lil dif than db's but you get the idea..

@ all

mornin!
agreed on the numbers... 200 will be a cakewalk now!

Morning all
@HBS - Thanks for the guide, thats excellent
Man, i'm gonna be busy this year. Hopefully my second will be another girl then that's one less room to decorate and i can get to work on my cab!!
I've already sourced some mylar from a local hydro shop - they may be able to supply fans as well.
As for lighting, my current CFL/relector rig will fit nicely, so one less thing to worry about. Just got to find the time - my 2 year old daughter and pregnant wife have me running around like a whippet on crack! And i've still got to finish decorating downstairs. It's not easy being a stay-at-home-dad!!!

update, got my tent built, ill be running some tests 2morro to measure temperature and all that fun stuff, ill post some pics when i wake up.

peace
