I had a couple succesful runs just cutting my tap water with jugs of distilled from the store. 50/50 and it goes a lot further, especially with the way prices have crept up lately. Last fall? 1gal 0.88 and now its 1.39
If you have a good nutrient plan you can use R/O very easily. Most nute line suggestions and schedules are for RO water and photoperiod plants. General advice is to reduce the strength for autos. I would not worry too terribly much about chloramines unless you are running a full living organic soil. A touch of powdered vitamin C, plain ascorbic acid, can neutralize the chloramines. If you have heavily treated water, leaving it out for a day with a pinch of Vit C and you should be good to go. It won't reduce the ppm count but cutting that with some distiled from the store can help.
If you try to do a full run with RO/distilled from the store, it gets expensive quick. It may be worth a small undersink RO system. Several are unobtrusive and run $60. I've been looking after the price jump on store bought.
Just an idea.
