Photo Question

Several grows ago, I started topping everything even though I grow in small 2 ltr pots.....More manageable...prob about the same in yeild as a "natural" grow. I usually top at 4th node. Never tried less than 12/12 for photos but of course all my autos are also on 12/12. Actually, the amount increase in yeild with more lighting does not equal the % increase of cost....

In tests I have run on Autos 18/6 is the best Value in energy usage, of course 12/12 for Photos. Photos actually cost more in energy because of the number of days running the lights. But the yields generally even things out on a g/watt/time value.

Appreciate all the input. In this instance the plants are photoperiod as opposed to Auto, which is new to me. So photo’s grown completely at 12/12 pr less, will they ultimately be shorter than a plant that was able to veg under more light than 12 for a period of time?

Correct, plants grown under 12/12 will be shorter, and yield will be less. Most people veg photo periods for months outdoors. Indoors is more like 2 month or so. This is done to maximize yield. It's also done to sex the plants to make sure you're not flowering males. Are your seeds fem seeds?

Genetics might play a small role in this, but yes. The plant will be considerably shorter and yield less bud as well. My friend has a plant right now that was started at 12/12 from seed and it is almost completely finished an is probably around 10 inches tall. He might get a little over a quarter of an oz off it.

Thank you for the responses!

My seedlings are photo periods I'm going to be running 2 in 2.5 gal pots one in a 1 gal pot and one in a solo cup. I was planning on making the flip around week 5, to keep them manageable because I'm a bit tight on space. However I'm planning on topping at the 4th and using lst. Would this be a happy medium between going straight from seed to flower and doing a full veg cycle? Or should I go a little longer in veg?

Any amount of veg time will be better than 12/12 from seed. The common rule in the photo period world is 1 gallon per month of veg. So a one gal pot gets 1 month veg.. Two gal pot gets 2 month veg ect.. It all depends on whether your lack of space is vertical or horizontal, but 5 weeks veg is normal for smaller pots/plants.

I have a rule when I grow Photos indoors I veg for two weeks or 16" tall whichever comes first at 18/6 then flip to 12/12. I broke that rule on my current grow and I am having to supercrop the girls that I let go 3 weeks waiting for two restarts to catch up.

They can spring up so fast. I have bent over 3 mains and 4 secondary branches The Panama red would be well over 7 feet if not bent over twice!

man those are monsters! so if two weeks pass and they are only at 10 inches flip them anyway? i was running the lights 24 hours for the first 3 days i just set my timer to 16/8 today, do i need to change them to 18/6? also, how tall do your photos usually get by flipping them using this method? i only have five feet vertically which has to also include the height of the containers. i was only shooting for a week 5 flip because im not using fem seeds and thats about the time they show sex.
