The best way to plant seeds outdoors is to plant them in the fall before the season even starts, this gives them the cold stratification that helps with the sprout vigor and health. If you do plant the same season; then early is the key as you guessed/studied. Some types take a very long time to get going if started late... Sprout time for me personally has been between 2 and 7 weeks, then things seem to slowdown but it's just the roots establishing themselves...

As far as outside, a crop will most likely pop up here in Colorado in April or May depending on the type of flower.

Thanks man, ill sow in the fall and a little more again in the late winter to be safe. do you gently water/mist them (if needed) when you start getting into the window of germination time or do you just rely on rainfall? because it starts getting dry around here by like march.

Also I'm not sure if this is allowed but does anyone have some spare seed they could let me have? would really appreciate it. I could cover postage with what's left in my ****** and visa giftcard.

I ordered white persian, hens & chicks (and a small free pack of pepperbox) from onestoppoppyshoppe but it just seems like i barely got any. Maybe it's because they're so small but I'd feel more at ease if I could sow some more and always thin them out if needed.

Fascinating thread. Not much activity lately. After having read several books a few years ago, I developed a real appreciation for this misunderstood plant (the synergistic affects of the alkaloids vs. phar single synthetic alkaloid). Would be thrilled to experience a traditional Asian smoke with all the rituals.

Dried poppy pod identification (decorative of course). This thread lost momentum, probably, because it contains a great deal of information.

Wonder if anyone has experience with decorative dried pods.

Would like to ID as close as possible the specie.

Curiously, they are super super dry. Most have black spotting (not mold), And several are nearly 2/3 black. Wonder if it is the alkaloids drying from a late harvest. Nothing smells unusual. In fact, they smell unique in their own right. Seeds in pods which I have not inspected for color.

I will post a group of photos if someone can, seriously, assist. But, posting for show and tell won't get us too far.

Alternatively, active members PM me and we can discuss them and I can get you a photo.


Edit: Research = Dark patches are the alkaloids. And are to be used carefully. As per my post above. Tea is one alternative to getting a sense of the traditional effects as opposed to vaporizing. A novelty experience. With caution and judiciously. See the book above--recommended.

I was going through a dark and weedless time in my life when I found out that garden poppies could be used for tea. I was in a hurry, so I made milkshakes by blending up green pods. It worked, but man, that shit tasted awful. It was always right on the edge of being able to get it down. So my mom, who loves milkshakes, asked me to share one day and I refused. That led to a big weepy "Are you on drugs?" scene that afternoon. No, Mom, but i hope you haven't counted your Xanax lately.

Just a funny story. I liked the opiate effect, but I don't think I'd do it again because I have a very addictive personality and weed takes care of those semi-depressed moments in a much more gentle way.

I noticed early in the thread that someone mentioned California Orange poppies. There's something called a California Poppy, which is orange, that is not closely related to P. somniferum and is not psychoactive.

surffreak23, Ive been reading this thread and have noticed you seem to be very knowledgeable about this stuff. I am new to growing poppies. I set up a grow room in my basement with (2) 4ft lights and (3) large storage containers (aprx 3' x 18" and 1 foot deep).I drilled holes in the bottom of containers, and filled one with potting soil and planted McCormicks Gourmet Poppie seeds. I am awaiting Purple Tasmainians, Gigantium, and Hens and Chicks in the mail. I will then choose 2 of those to plant in other 2 containers. I live in the North East USA and my basement is aprx 40-50 degrees in the winter. i have lights set for 12 and 12 during germination. I will leave it 12 and 12 thru veg. then increase to 16 on and 8 off when they flower. How does this rough game plan sound to you?

Well, scratch one stop poppy shop off of the list. Only two out of hundreds of their seeds came up while most of my seed stock from the San Juan Islands came up just fine. Lots of big plants with multiple pods growing out back, tincture time soon!

I've been harvesting some fantastic latex these past few weeks, just did another bit today actually. Half my pods are drying out now but the other half still have a lot of juice left in them. Poppy tea will come later in the season and pod putty after that, wish these plants grew all year round.

Just tagged on to the end of this thread so I'm gonna head back and read the beginning. Just wanted to brag I suppose lol.
