I always knew the tube that you use to smoke as a "bat" and the container is the "dugout" both baseball terms. The tubes I have used were made from metal or ceramic. I prefer the ceramic bats and I always carry a spare due to clogging. Taste is okay, the convience is why I use one. Great for disc golfing. The dugouts that I have used in the past were made from wood, metal and the same material bowling balls are made of. Wooden dugout can get moldy, I prefer the bowling ball material dugout, super rugged, really easy to clean, and when I scrape the bottom for the last bit of meds, I don't end up smoking a bunch of sawdust instead.

Brass, machined with heat radiators and a sharp edge. Circa late 70's was advertised as the "Pinch Hitter" in counterculture magazines. I remember thinking it looked space aged. I still use it!
Borosilicate glass, This one is cool and tastes great. It doesn't have a sharp cutter edge so it has to be stuffed.

Pro's:
  • Don't have to grind anything or carry loose pot. Just stick the metal bat in a bud and give it a twist, pull out a plug, and light it.
  • You get a "green hit" every time. Especially nice with the glass one.
  • Perfect to sneak a toke when you're out and about
Con's:
  • Doesn't take long to get all gunked up and smelly.
  • Sometimes you inhale ash or a burning bit.
  • Even though the glass one is sturdy, it's glass so I don't take it out with me, defeating its purpose.
  • The glass one shows me the dirt right away. It is a bit shocking and that encourages me to vape, so it's kind of a pro.

Never had a dugout though. It was always a small mint tin etc. Even though there are some very nice wooden dugouts, I always think that it is a bulky way to carry a couple of small items.
