Good hello, AFN!

I am very pleased to have found you.

Years ago I was a member at the now defunct Overgrow.com.

I have been a stoner & grower for Private Non-sale Use since 1979.

I don't feel it is right for anyone to sell pot but I understand why they do. Hopefully more & more people will simply overgrow what they need and pass on the surplus to others for free.

It's the brotherly thing to do.
It helps make the world a friendlier place.
If this attitude & practise catches on, it will drive the prices down significantly and this will make it less appealing for crime syndicates to exploit.

Governments that say no to legalization are saying YES to organized crime and their tax-free profits of BILLIONS.

I have grown indoors and outdoors...but have always had better results indoors. I used to own a 250 HPS which I bought from Applied Hydroponics in 1989. I wanted to grow plants that would result in one large bud and I achieved that. This was back in the days before the popularity of auto-strains. I would use bagseed Humboldt County Skunk and after the 3rd set of leaves I would cut back the lighting from 18 hours a day to 9 hours, and within a week the plants would start flowering.

The end result would be plants that were about 14 inches tall and one solid bud.
Good stuff, mate!

Nowadays I live in the UK and no longer have the HPS. I recently entered the world of auto-strains and LED. My first and current LED is a UFO 135. My auto strain is LowRyder 2. My first crop was a success---IMO---and I was harvesting the top buds at just 6 weeks from seedling! I harvest when most of the hairs are red.

I have been lurking and researching LEDs at various growsites for many months now. I am shocked by how many LED growers keep their lamps so far from the plants! I keep my lamp as close as possible to the tops and there is NO burning whatsoever. Basically my lamp is always about 2 inches from the tops of the plants. If it's any higher than that then the plants stretch and there is wasted space between the nodes.

I learned from my first LED grow that the penetration from the lamp only extends about 6 inches down.

I am now interested in buying a stronger lamp. I am considering something between 240 - 300 watts. Being un-wealthy at the moment I cannot afford anything bigger. I am seriously considering an Evader 240 (189 quid) as it costs less than a Blackstar 240 (249 quid). The Evader is sold by the same folks who sold me my UFO 135 (99 quid). The UFO is well built and has not given me any problems in the 6 months I have owned it.

I hope to learn from you righteous mofos and I hope to be of assistance as well. I am a bit stubborn in my ways and may not always offer advice that is popular but is nonetheless earned by experience. For one thing, I keep things simple. I don't mess about with fertilizers or PH readings. I use tomato-growbag dirt, water, and light, and that's it. I experimented with fertilizers and found that there truly was no significant increase in yield---perhaps a few grams more, and yet it was easy to over-fertilize and burn the plants. If you want bigger & denser buds, then they need stronger light rather than fertilizer. But, to each his own!

I am also shocked by how many of y'all don't remove your fan leaves...Fan leaves shade the growth below them. This is not good. I am not saying remove all the fan leaves at once! But as each one gets to a certain size it becomes safe and advantageous to remove them. Removing them allows light penetration and stimulates a new branch to grow sooner than if you just leave the fan leaves on.
But again, to each his own!

Any advice on 240 - 300 watt LED lamps sold in the UK will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers, mates!

Great introduction. Glad to have you here and look forward to your contributions my friend. There's a great array of information to be had on this forum - a lot of it is in depth auto flower, but there's gems to be had in the other sections as well. A lot of medical tests w/ homeopathic remedies, a strong support for medical users.. some great outdoor and guerilla knowledge to be had as well. While the size of the community may not be on par with some of the bigger forums - the vibe of the community is top notch. Some of the kindest folks you'll ever meet will be on this forum. :2cents:

We've got some great moderators in our lighting forum who would be keen on offering advice - I'll try to get them involved here in this thread, but I'd recommend reading through our LED section and seeing folks successes with the lights available. We actually have some vendors on site, like Grow Northern and fero.

There's also a great many breeders here and some very very special genetics to be had in this community. Low Ryder #2 is a great plant to start with.. but wait until you see what autos are really capable of. :wiz:

Thanks for the rapid response, WG!

I have ventured beyond LowRyder 2 and bought some single auto seeds from Pick N Mix: Bubble, Haze, Grapefruit, and NYC, but only the Bubbles germinated. Unfortunately this past March & April were exceptionally cold and my boiler broke down and wasn't repaired for a month. As a consequence the growroom often dipped below 10 Celsius and it stunted the Bubbles. Damnit! It took nearly 14 weeks before they were ALMOST ready to harvest but I went ahead and chopped them because I had no smoke. Still, even though they were immature they produced a damn good buzz.

It's now 5 minutes to 3 in the morning here in the UK and so I am off to bed.

Thanks for the warm welcome, mate!

Welcome and nice intro :bong:

Now that is one well thought out introduction.

AFN is international. However, the UK members comprise a big segment. Including founders, administrators and moderators.

You have found the right forum.

With your experience and natural methods many will want to follow along with one of your journal grows.

Right, fan leaves. Can be a highly debatable topic. Heated too. What I do is take off "my fan leaves" before I go to sleep at night--:twist:.

Cheers.

Thank you, Alan!

I am well chuffed by your comment that many of the members & staff are based here in the UK! This should definitely help me find the lamp I want.

Fan leaves:
Yea, I know from my experience at Overgrow.com that it can be a touchy subject. But long ago, back in the early 1980s, High Times had an article by 'R' titled Pruning for Production. It also had a photo of a plant that was an absolute bush---every branch was a long, full bud---an arm of bud! And so I started doing what he suggested---removing the fan leaves before they got too big and it definitely increased my yield.

Thanks to all of you who have welcomed me! Man, are pot smokers cool, or what? You don't get this kind of friendliness at any other non-pot related forums!

Cheers, maties!
