i harvested a few branches off one of my blue cheese autos that were ready. when it was first cut it smelled really dank but after a couple days it started to get a bit of a grassy smell. is this normal?

my dry room is kept between 50-52% RH and 68-70F with a fan to circulate the air (not blowing directly at the flowers).

That's the chlorophyll "gassing off" if I'm correct. Once you get it dried, and get it cured, it should go back to being dank.

Just make sure you don't over dry and the smell should come back after a couple weeks cure, I found using brown bag method holds the smell a bit better then hang drying, good luck :d5:

Slow dry and burp. The hay smell will fade over the first couple weeks of burping. If you take the time and sample, you'll smell and taste when she turns the corner.

Well worth the effort... you spent all this time to grow...a lot of time, effort, and if like most of us, a lot of love with your babies. Take the time to do this right to. The rewards are well worth it.

thanks everyone. im still waiting for the first plant to smell good in its cure and i've got two more plants hanging now... and my fourth plant is a few days away from harvest.

So it’s been almost 2 months now...how did it turn out???? I was coming on here to ask this exact same question....3 days after I cut it the hay smell appeared and now I’m freaking out hoping it goes away because I’ve always associated that smell with “homegrown” I want that dispensary smell and taste

I hope it's normal, I just hung some stinky girl's up in the tent 3-4 day's now. At first they were stinky, then in a couple of day's, they started smelling like grass. S:jointman:omeone that know's for sure should answer.

Everything was living tissue, with plant cells composed of a good amount of proteins (composed of amino acids), DNA/RNA, chlorophyll, and other substances containing some nitrogen (N) atoms. I can't think of any N-containing substance that would desirable be in cannabis, including smell and taste not being right. Terpenes and cannabinoids generally contain no N. The smell is from final breakdown of N-containing substances to NH3 (ammonia), most likely from microbial fermentation or enzymes within or released from dead cells.

Getting this smell (N-compound breakdown) early while drying is what you want, while the internal tissues still have enough water to support some microbial and enzymatic activity. Otherwise, if dried too fast, I'd presume that more of the N-containing substances will remain longer.

I often let plants (or branches) dry for 10 days for more. I see no need to rush the drying process, such as do it in less than 5-7 days.
