Hi Guys. I'm starting this journal late but that just means I saved you a month and a half of waiting :tiphat: This is my very first grow. I started one known seen that was Northern Lights x Big Bud from WOS. The second was from a 5-pack assortment of Big Buddha seeds that was said to contain a mix of White Dwarf, Red Dwarf, Deimos and/or Syrup. My best guess is that she turned out to be a White Dwarf, but please correct me if you can say for sure.
I didn't go too crazy here as it's a small first time grow. Here are my components:
EQUIPMENT
4x24" T5 fixture
3 CFL supplements
4" Vortex fan 160CFM+
4x16" Phresh scrubber
2x92mm intakes @ 60CFM each
2 small circulation fans
3# plastic pots
MEDIUM
1/4 MiracleGro Moisture Control soil
1/4 Perlite
1/4 Vermiculite
1/4 Mix of castings, sphagnum, bone meal and coco
NUTES
GH 3-Part Base
GH Diamond Nectar
GH Kool Bloom
GH RapidStart
SuperThrive
I planted the seeds directly in a 3lb plastic pot. I made a 3" diameter dent in the top of the soil, roughly 3 inches deep, filled with Jiffy Seed Starter mix. I wanted the seedling to have no nutes until its roots grew into the hot soil around it. I just watered with SuperThrive for the first week, then switched to plain water for the first three weeks while she fed off the soil. I then began using the GH nutes at 1/2 strength and up to full strength after one week.
It looks as though the Dwarf burns more easily. The NLxBB is loving every minute of her life. She looks so healthy my friend thought she was plastic. The Dwarf caught up in height but is still far behind in flowering. They both started getting their tops in order at the same time but the Dwarf took an extra two weeks to show sex.
Let me know your thoughts:
4/21/2014 -- 7 Days From Sprout
4/26
5/1
5/7
5/10
5/14
5/22
5/24
5/29
So to quickly recap, I have an NLxBB and a White Dwarf(guessing) at day 45 from sprout.
Here's where I want to hear your thoughts and experiences...
I started at 24/0 for the first two weeks or so and then switched to 18/6 on 5/4. Both plants were growing steadily until I changed the light cycle. At this time both plants stunted for several days and then guess what I saw on 5/8...two pairs of beautiful white pistils "pher Wiggle" Followed by a healthy growth spurt.
Leading to the obvious follow-up question: Why did both girls go into flower immediately after the light cycle change if autos aren't influenced by photoperiod?
My thoughts are that since you hear growers at both ends of the spectrum regularly, it seems there is a balance between auto/photo traits, just like there is a balance between indica/sativa. Crossing a photo with Ruderalis does not mean that the photo trait disappears completely, leading to wild variations even between seeds from the same parents. These are simply my n00b observations, feel free to slap some sense into me.
Thinking back, I did feel they were going into flower over a week early but I really had no reference to go on. Now that they are developed further, I am more convinced of this. I wound up having to cut off 3 bottom stems on the Dwarf that would not even show pistils yet. I thought it was pointless to keep these as they would just suck energy and not produce. The fans for these stems already started to dry up and I was able to pick them off with just a gentle tug. I did some light lower fan trimming on the NLxBB at 3 weeks old and she seemed to really like it. I also tipped the fans that I left on. I've left the Dwarf's leaves alone until now.
Much of this is just me doing what I feel is right and hoping for the best...this is my first grow after all, and there's only so much you can learn from reading journals and guides.
In hindsight, I think they (mostly the Dwarf) would have done better had I not flipped the lights early and confused them. The NLxBB probably would have added at least a couple more inches, but I'm glad she didn't take over the cabinet. I have 4 more NLxBB seeds and I plan on growing them two different ways. Two will grow at 24/0, flipping to 18/6 after 30 days. The other two will grow at 18/6 from seed. But that's down the road.
The Dwarf stayed about 1.5" behind the NLxBB until the last 3 days where the NLxBB stopped her stretch and the Dwarf caught up. They are both 21" today. I'll keep you all posted
