Keeping the plant short will only happen for 3 reasons.
1) genetics
2) root restrictions in a small pot.

I started them 20/4 with a 6500k cold led amd outside. But i was thinking to go 12/12 so they will stay short and used to thw 'outdoor conditions'.
What do you say about that?

I agree with @St. Tom. Because they are autos there really isn't any benefit to the plant running 12/12 unless you have other environmental concerns like heat control or something like that.

I did a couple of small window grows when I was a kid. But they were nothing to brag about. I didn't understand how pot size contributes to plant size. I didn't know anything about growing mediums, ph. Nothing. That said I did finish them out with an oz of bud from 4 of the smallest mature plants I have ever seen lol.

I didn't substitute light for them either just natural light. I would start with an East facing window in the am. Then I would put them on the porch in the afternoon. And a western facing window in the evening.
Btw don't take any of this as advice. Just telling my experience. Wish you the best of luck with your grow.
