Grow Mediums Newbie Autoflower Grow (autopot)

Happy New Year @lunerman. Yes I am planning on transplanting into Autopots. I am anxious to use them ..LOL .. But I will be patient as I read that I don't start running them until about day 20 ..

General rule of thumb is if using cups then transplant to autopots on day 10 to avoid root bound. And manually hand water from the top for the next 10 days. Then turn on the autopot irrigation system on day 20.

I'm not sure how much I've shared before so sorry if this is what you already know. On about day 8 or 9 load up your autpots with hydrated and charged coco (min 600 ppm) and put in a place holder with a cup for the plant to drop in to for the transplant. Put the pots in the tent one day before to get the substrate temperature set.

I would also recommend you don't put tray covers on. I don't use them and no issues. That way you can easily visually check that there is liquid and you don't have a clog. I just had 2 autopot systems clog up on me. And that is using Advanced liquid nutes and Drip Clean and 0 ppm RO filtered water. But I did run Megacrop powdered nutes for veg so that is probably where this comes from. People have different ways to make sure there isn't a clog. Lift the pots up and weigh them. Pop the tray covers off and look inside. Measure the height of the water in the res tank and make sure its dropping ever day. I might have missed one or two ways. I have tried most of them and I find the best way is to have the covers off all the time and visually inspect every day. when you see the trays are dry then you have a clog But find your own way as everyone does thru time. Experiment. You'll find a process that you like.

And if you get clog and you likely will or you better at least be prepared for it.... get a big syringe from a medical supply store. 100 ml or something big. Disconnect the line at the res and at the pot end. Put a container near one end to catch liquid. Go to the other end and plunge the hot water in to the line. That will clear lines. Its even a good idea to do this on occasion during a grow just to see what kind of crud comes out and just for preventive maintenance.

no worries @lunerman about repeats .. I am getting old and I need repeats lol … I really appreciate all the impute I can get … How often do you flush your lines? I have a 60ml but I can go and get a bigger one

60ml is definitely good. that's what I have I think. I flush with it twice. first time removes a lot of crud. 2nd time you can see its pretty clean.

How often? Well it depends of course! Depends on your nutes probably. And the hardness of your water. But if you wanted to do it on a regular basis and not just when you get a clog, I'd considering something like every 6 weeks. And at the end of each grow, before the next one.

Now that will flush the lines. But another place you can get a clog is the tiny little hole in the valve. You can see that hole when you pivot up the floats on the valve and look where the input to the valve is. So if you have your lids off the trays and you see one tray is dry but the others are full then you might have a clog at the valve! So when you get down to it, you're looking at possible clog points being the lines or the valves. But I have found its the lines that clog the most.

To add onto what @lunarman has already said, 60ml syringe is what I use also. I have an extra set of turnoff valves at the base of each tray. That way I can turn off an individual tray in the system and blow water thru the autovalve to clear it also. Sometimes I won’t use water, as I have a quick disconnect for my air pump in the tent, I will just hook it to the feed line until I see bubbles in the rez or tray depending on direction.

I use both the measure water in the rez daily and check trays methods. A lot of times I grow just one plant in a 3x3 so no need to check the one tray if the water is going down in the rez.
See, one tent, one plant, one autopot, easy as pie.:smoking:

What a plant! Nice canopy my friend.

She is twice the size of the original harvest, mainly because I fell ill while the reveg was happening and it went a tad longer than I had anticipated before I got around to flipping her. I might even try this again for a third harvest now that I have an extra tent to grow different strains.
