My plants did not root though the middle of pot?

Hi all
I’ve just chopped my plants which did ok over all but I noticed the roots did not go all the way though the middle of pots and I’m not sure why any help will be appreciated

possibly from not watering enough not the frequency of watering but the quanity.

Hi thanks for the reply
I didn’t water them till they run off because I didn’t want to over water them. They were still wet in the middle when I sorted them out, but my friend watered them at the start for me and I wonder if he overwatered which would water log them and cause the soil to lose oxygen maybe?
