New Grower My first grow attempt HBSS

After a rough start and the death of 9 seeds. I was able to get 5 to pop up. These are from the freebies pack. So I have no clue what they are.

Quick recap:
4x4x7 tent, 2 Vipar 600 watt LED.
Soil is 60% FFOF, 20% coco and 20% Earth Castings.
Nutes will be a variety of organics

They are about 3 days old. First 24 hours they soaked in distilled water, 24 hours in a Rapid Rooter and now been in soil for 24 hours.
I kinda got buck fever when they were in RR. After 24 hours roots popped out the bottom about 2 inches. So I moved to soil right away.
So I'm worried about nute burn.

Hi GR: Welcome!

I am old school and like you I was clean for about 25 years as a career choice. Now my back is wearing out. I won't do opioids too many of my friends died from that shit in the 70s and the nsaids started messing with my liver and kidneys; that is when my doctor prescribed cannabis for the pain. Woohoo, it is the 60s all over again only the pot is so much stronger. I had my first hydro grow back in 75 so going hydro seemed like the way to go for my indoor grow. Pumps that move the weight around are easy on my back. I live in the San Joaquin Valley of California USA and have grown vegetables and flowers organically since before that was a thing. I think I was a bug in a previous life because pesticides really offend me. At one point in time I had a truck farm with my own fruit and vegetable roadside stand. I have almost always had a personal vegetable garden except a few lean years spent in an apartment.

I am learning new stuff all of the time but I have a hard time giving up on old tried and true methods. One of those is how I germinate seeds - right in the medium they will grow in. Rapid rooters for soil and rockwool for hydro. Just plant your seeds point up 1/2" deep keep moist and warm and they will grow. No chance of damaging that tiny little root. My current grow is an exception to my rule of never transplanting. I am using rockwool cubes for the first time and wanted to follow GroDan's instructions to the letter. My current grow is linked in my signature. You will see that the transplant process is done when the seed is already established in a starter block and may be a necessary evil in this system.

Am I rambling on and on - must be the meds anyhow welcome!:bubbles:

Starter plugs. I feel like a broken record...ANYONE reading this thats a dope farmer, give em a shot. They are cheap, EXTREMELY effective, and keeps your monkey fingers away from those delicate ass tap roots. Think of it as the "paper towel method" but much improved. Bonus: You can start em in the plugs and have a full week before they need to be "planted", but you can also go straight away with them. Don't know about you, but for me time between harvests and space under COBs is precious. I use big pots for growing as well. Having an extra week without 3-5 gallon containers with basically nothing in them is huge. Also for LST, it let's you see the nodal growth before actually planting, so if you want a perfect 5 way LST tops plant, you can twist it to the preferred direction. Just make sure to get em planted before any of the roots hit the air. We all know that time lost in the beginning will haunt you in the final yield. [emoji43] 5

I will be using the rapid rooters from now on. Mine popped out after 12 hours of being placed in RR with just a 24 soak in distilled water. 12 hours later the roots came out the bottom about 2 inchs. So I had to get them in soil. I was worried about nute burn from the FFOF but they seem to be doing ok. So there chillin in 3 gallon fabric pots and should not need to feed them for a while. Just the ph aerated water.

GR:

Do not soak seeds - you are drowning them! That tap root needs air the second that seed cracks open. The rare exception to that is really old seeds - 10 years old or seeds that have not been stored properly. Unless you have some special genetics you are trying to preserve don't waste time, effort and money on old seeds. According to seedfinder.eu there are 11,604 different cannabis varieties to grow - that should keep you busy with new fresh seeds forever.
