Live Stoner Chat Mission to colonise Mars - Mars One

They have an official website. Talking about colonizing mars is on of my top 5 favorite subjects to think about when Im high lmao.

You can actually apply to be a part of the project, although the screening process is quite intensive

The screening process is also not free. So you gotta pay to be screened for an idea that wont happen.

It is only a matter of funding. Even if only one organization is legitimately persuing it, that means that it will invetably be pursued by other people as well. Whether or not this mission actually manages to be pulled off, the simple fact that it is being attempted, makes it real. The only other limiting factor now, is time.

"how they would be able to survive for more than a short time on the surface without a proven means to grow food or a local water supply."

Wouldn't the only problem there be the water supply? Solve the water problem and you solve the food problem. Anyway, I like the idea very much. No idea if it can be pulled off with current tech, but definitely an important step for humanity regardless of who pulls it off or when. Don't know why they're only sending two couples, though. Hopefully more will arrive before the colony population swells to awkward levels.

Yep, water is the only issue really. Hydroponics would make the most sense for food until they could fertilize the soil. By breeding photoplankton in the water they could also convertthe abundance of co2 on mars to oxygen within the bio dome.

First trip would literally be guinea pigs. They would do very preliminary work, and see if it is suitable for life. Also, unforseen problems would be identified.

Second trip you send up an entire group with as many resources as they can handle, to colonize and develop the land.

I tried to put myself in the shoes of someone who knew that in 2020-something they'd be getting on a shuttle and leaving earth for good. I'm more than willing to donate my £30 to help but I'm not sure I could do it. Seriously ponder the thought for a second, could you?? Could you leave this planet, forever?

:smokebuds:

I would love to, but most people certainly couldnt. It takes a certain breed to walk alone into the unknown, knowing theres no turning back. Im sur they would test people extensively. Those who display emotional sensitivity just wouldnt be suited. I would expect alot of military personell, as well as scientists. Basically anyone who values logic and reason above all else, and is willong to take orders without question. Everyone would need to have a very shallow emotional range. Emotions would be toxic in that environment during the initial colonization.

The only downsides to me are that im sure there will be a fuckload of work to be done. Free time will be non existant. Branching off of that, Im sure drugs will be strictly prohibited for obvious reasons. Although, living on mars is provably trippy enough.
