Ok so I've always heard "stay away from MG!!!!" then i got to thinkin ya know its prob like most things where people just accept what they hear....is MG actually that bad?? So i did some searching and it look like a lot of people are beginning to erase this myth as they had amazing grows with MG. Claiming the bad rep has become overblown! The only gripe some people have is the time realeased nutes can cause over ferterlization of the plants.

My question is would you recomment MG stadard mix or MG organic mix. Organic is 10-5-5, standard is 24-8-16. Ill be honest im not super familiar with how and when the npk ratio effects pot plants. Help there please? So do you agree MG is good for the casual grower and help me understand the impact of soil npk ratios! Thanks

Welcome to the Afn man.

There have been several successful grows using MG soils. I don't think anyone here is saying that it just flat out won't work and grow, but it is more than generally steered away from here at this forum because most of us are growing Autoflowering plants. These cannabis plants in particular do not do well with any nutrients early in the life cycle. And with slow release it's harder to control what the nutrient feeds are because of what is released over time when you water from the soil. I used MG perlite and it has screwed me over pretty good. The NPK is Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. Your three basic all around nutrients that plants need. That being said there are other nutrients that you need but many nute lines include these or you get extra supplements.
So in conclusion, no. I personally do not recommend MG products for AF cannabis. It's easier to use for photo period cannabis and your standard fruits, veggies and other herbs.

I have used mg soil for years, not only for weed but flowers and house plants, and have had no problems. Those numbers of 10-5-5, and 24-8-16 where did you get them neither mg solls half amyware near that amount of nutes in the mix.The organic mix shouldnt have any chem based nutes at all. That 24 8 16 is the number on the mg all purpose powder fert that you mix with water,im looking at mine right now and i you that for my veg grow.

For every one successful grow with MG, I can find you dozens of others with burned plants and pissed off growers. Especially with autoflowers which tend to be more nute sensitive than photo plants. Is there a reason why you are considering MG instead of nutes that are more cannabis friendly? The Better Gro orchid nutes sold at Lowe's have been known to work great and they're very affordable.

Check out this link for a good explanation of NPK and how they affect cannabis, associated deficiencies, etc.

Yep, growing good crops with MG can definitely be done, but for new growers the time release nutes just add a level of complexity that isn't necessary. vv, if you're on a tight budget, I'd recommend heading over to the New Growers forum and get Muddy and Joe to help you find a good soil and nute combo for your needs. Promix is actually very affordable if you have a hydro shop nearby, otherwise those guys can help you decide from whatever you have available locally. And you can get some veg nutes that will get your grow started right for around ten bucks.

Well, sure I could drink seven eleven coffee, but i like the good stuff. I like to treat my plants the same way. I'm completely guilty of using miracle grow organic soil on my first grow and I got okay results with it, but I don't support their parent company Scotts and try not to buy their products. I also could never get the results I do from amending more canna specific soils with my own amendments. So, yes, it will work. No, i don't recommend it.

I am a HUGE supporter of Miracle grow and Miracle Grow Vegetable nutes. I have never had any problem growing Sativa or with my Auto crops. Granted I am using LR2 for my auto and i am still in the middle of my first auto grow but I have not yet seen any sign of plant malnutrition or burning. The key with the MG nutes is to actually follow MG instructions. Of course you want to ease the nutes in slowly early on. However you need to have a pure water rinse before putting the nutes back in and you wont have MG burn issues. For Instance i have 3 totes each one gets 2 gallons of straight 6.6-6.8 Water then 2 gallons of full strength MG nute mixed in with the same water. The purpose behind this is to flush any old nutes out to the bottom of the totes/pots/container what have you to prevent stacking of nutes that would in turn harm or burn your crop. My zwei pfennig

Right. Like this cat here^^^^^. Sorry can't type your name with those characters. And no offence at all to your posts. But you are one in very few having good results. I'm glad you are actually. What strain/s are you growing?
Some are more lenient on nutrients as are others. I tried four different strains on my current first AF grow. Bad idea I know now. I have had problems since liftoff mostly because of my mix being too hot, and it had MG perlite, with soil from a local nursery that I now know is similar to MG products. It has slow release nutrients, which are going to not work well for Afs unless you happen to come across the strain or pheno of that strain that can handle it, which is pretty darn rare. Your best bet is to just go with another soil. Easy as that, bro.
