Greetings folks. This thread will document a test grow of two new strains (Livers Bx-1 & Sour Stomper-x-Strawberry Nuggets) courtesy of the good folks at Mephisto (thanks @stan_mephisto). Additionally, if I can successfully germinate two of each strain, we will be testing Optic Foliar's products on one of the pairs.

(Update: I couldn't get a 2nd LIvers to germinate, so we are running the "new version" of Toofless Alien instead.)

My kit for this grow is:
Gorilla Grow tent: 4x4x8
Lights: AutoCobs from CobShop; 1 each 3500K and 1 shared 2700k
6" intake fan, 6" exhaust fan, two interior circulation fans
Analog humidifier with Inkbird Controller
Four 3-Gallon AutoPots with Air Domes
Medium: Coco/Hydroton @ 60/40 mix
Nutrients: Prescription Blend
Optic Foliar

Germination strategy for getting from seed to sprout:
1. 12 hours soaking in a shot glass
2. 24 hours (or until the seed develops a tap root) in a damp paper towel (in black plastic envelop on top of router)
3. Then into a jiffy starter plug (in a humidity tray on a heat mat under dual T5 bulbs) until the cotyledons appear
4. Then into the AutoPot.

One each are right on track. Here is their "Day 1" in the AutoPot.

Unfortunately, the 2nd seed of each is not yet popping from the jiffy cube. We may have to drop another set of seeds.

:pighug: Hey Sky! How's them bab-bee's? :eyebrows: ... nice to see another Livers bx run finally! Mine is curing nicely, she needs it more than usual it seems... potency is spiking up every time I test
'Stomper x SN, a new Reserva or Illuminato?

Well, its been a slow and rough start for me here in Meph-ville. I did finally get a 2nd Sour Stomper-x-Strawberry Nuggets germinated, but failed to succeed with with remaining seeds of Livers Bx1. So instead I'm working on the new version of Toofless Alien. It's germinated, but its struggling. I give it 40% chance of overcoming crib-death. Perserverence will eventually win out and I'll have a fine crop of new Mephisto strains -- just going to take a bit of time & effort.

Here's the Alien at day 3, day 6, and day 11. Poor thing. Another few days and then maybe we will have to drop and 2nd replacement seed. Interesting that I'm getting some yellow mushrooms. This is new for me. Happened to a couple of the other Mephistos in this grow. The mushrooms immediately die off and disappear once I remove the little "humidity dome" cup that I've had on them during the first week or two.

Meanwhile ... Here's the Livers Bx-1 at day 23 and day 28. She initially emerged with funky misshaped leaves, and the subsequent growth isn't much better yet. She also yellowed badly initially, but that appears to be improving slightly with new growth. Fingers crossed with her.

And here are the two Sour Stomper-x-Strawberry Nuggets (I'll call them SS-SN1 and SS-SN2).

The first at day 22 and then 5 days later at day 27

And then the 2nd SS-SN at day 19 and 24:

So, of the four plants here, 3 are getting Optic Foliar (Overgrowth). This last one, the 2nd SS-SN is just getting kelp misting. All are getting an early phase diluted mix of the Prescription Blend nutrients -- initially just A & B, but recently I've added in some Bio-Si

hi sky my old friend how you keeping bro i was also wondering have you changed something as you seem to be getting real problems early are you using your coco again or different nutes as i tried some new coco a few months ago and its burned my plants it was called Blackdog coco i think and it had a very high ec for seedling but i thought you were now using the same as me canna with the clay balls

Thanks for keeping an eye on me and making great suggestions. I hadn't considered the coco, but you might be on to something. I'm also having this problem in both the Dinafem and HSO grows, both using the same medium. I looked back and realized I also had a touch of this issue in the previous grow with Zamnesia. All are using my "new" scheme which is this coco with 40% hydroton (clay balls). Here is the coco that I am using:

IMG_5176.JPGIMG_5177.JPGIMG_5178.JPG

Neither the clay balls nor the coco was pre-treated; I didn't wash them, just mixed up the ratios and loaded up the AutoPots and RainScience Grow Bags. At that point they were treated with a liter of Recharge with a touch of Roots Excellerator -- well before (many) days) the sprouts were planted into the mixture.

So there may be a pattern or trend here. I will say, once a plant gets past the first several weeks and puts out a 3 set of leaves or more, then things seem okay from there on. But yipes, the first couple of weeks are a dismal struggle with a high mortality rate.

if you have a little bit of the coco test the runoff out of the bag that black dog I had was over 2.0 and I got same issues as you... Also I think it says its pre buffered on the back of your bag but I think it could be pebbles maybe

Ok, so I loaded up a basic felt/cloth grow bag with about 4-6 liters of my coco/hydroton mix -- figured I start with the full mix which should test the combination of the two ingredients together. If necessary, I can do them separately later. I then poured 2 liters of RO water slowly through the bag, and collected about a liter of runoff. Here"s the outcome:

RO water all by itself = 0.004 EC (2 ppm)
RO runoff from the coco/hydroton = 0.686 EC (343 ppm)

This seems to align pretty close with what is listed on the Coco bag specifications: EC= <0.5 +/- 0.2
So I'd guess that the hydroton didn't add much, maybe just a titch or so.

So ... I'm no chemist or biologist, and I virtually never use a PPS meter. But it seems to me like these numbers should be OK for tiny seedlings, eh?

that should be fine and maybe because you never rinsed the pebbles also these were my plants off that new bluestaff coco it had me questioning everything about my grow as i never have issues ever with young plants
