Im gonna have a crack at making some oil by following (TRYING)a video on youtube by rick simpson, but id like to know if it makes a massive difference drying it out before using the alcohol.

Hi @bobsimm123
I usually make sure my material is dry, less moisture you need to get out.
But RSO can be made with fresher material, you will get all the moisture out in the end.
Good luck in your adventure, take pictures and let us know how it goes!

Cheers for the reply, ill take pictures. Its gonna be the heating part thats the problem as i have other houses all around, think im gonna have to cross my fingers the dont smell it. Lol

Maybe you can bake cookies (or something) at the same time to mask the smell.
Hahaha yeah. Cooking really is the wifes thing. If you mean burn some cookies then yeah i could. (Not actually a bad idea)

Be careful, there are some dangerous recipes involving isopropyl alcohol or naptha, which are poisonous.
190 proof ethanol (everclear) works very well and is safe.
Decarb will be needed, either before starting, or after finishing, to activate the thc.
Not drying the herb first can mess up decarb, and make the residual water hard to remove.

This is what i planned on following unless (someone probably does) you know of another better guide.

One more quick question: whats the smell like when burning the alcohol off using a water double boiler?

You can follow the video procedure using any solvent, including everclear, but some solvents work better than others.
The poisonous solvents might work a tiny bit better than 190 proof ethanol, but are very dangerous, and not worth the risk.
Either follow the video using everclear, or just make cannacaps or edibles.
Lower proof than 190 won't work as well.

RSO (nearly the same as FECO Full Extract Cannabis Oil) is very inconvenient, and most people dilute it at least slightly with a bit of warm oil.
Unless you need to take huge doses of thc daily, there are much easier, tastier methods.

Simplest of all is to decarb the herb (240 F for 40 min), grind to fine powder, blend/dissolve the herb powder along with some lecithin into the oil of any recipe, add that mixture to the recipe, bake, and use.
This is my favorite method.
There is almost zero herb taste when using at least 10 g edible with 1/4 gram herb, but whole herb does bother some peoples' stomachs.

The same thing can be done to make RSO, except that the herb is soaked, the mixture strained, and most/all of the alcohol evaporated/boiled off.

I have detailed written instructions for making FECO/RSO/Tincture or cannacaps if you have interest.
