Indeed auto's are perfect for outdoors in Scotland. I've read a few diaries from up north of photo strains that were successful. The advantage of auto's being there size, you can always start em indoors and transplant out during june/july. Greenhouses and polytunnels always worked for my veggies back home to protect em from the wind. I'd personally do multiple starts from as early as mid april as the weather is so unpredictable you could get away with it. might be a loss but if ye plant in 2 week intervals then some will survive.

it would be sheer luck aye, last year we had our 2 weeks of Summer in May, and no more prolonged spells of warmth again, maybe a few consecutive days at most. Plenty of sun mind you, specially high on the west coast, just not too warm so a greenhouse with a wee heater and you'd be away. Picture living in a small croft close to a beach on the Atlantic coastline, a poly tunnel behind said croft offering magnificent views as you tended your crop, you could become as self sufficient as you can/can be bothered and sell your surplus weed to provide a steady income.

I'm game!!! I'd prefer a warmer climate tho... love my sun tan and workin in the sun... low light of winter here kills me!

:toke:

but I can picture that.... very well... :toke:

Ever been up to krinnan beach?

nope, not come across that one yet, whenever we head for weekends away its the Oban area, any further takes too long travel-wise. Truth be told I'm a Yorkshireman so Whitby and Brid are more my old stomping ground, ...the croft idea is simply a whimsical fantasy of mine, never say never as my ol'gran used to say.

crinan is just south of oban, if ye come from the south head up towards oban via Inveraray and it's just off the road once past lochgilpead. The beauty of it is that it's hardly known, not publicised as it's quite small and only really locals know about it. I lived nearby for a while years ago.

from a 30 sec google image thingy, i'm sold.

My Link is to the old ferry harbour where ye park, the beach is around to the right past the boathouse.

Your pic is the village which is close by. the crinan canal runs by the village and round the side of the loch, slightly higher than the loch. You cross the canal and go round the other side of the loch and park near the "Old Ferry Harbour". From there ye jump off the wall of the harbour water that can be either 6 inches deep or 2 foot feep depending on tide and walk round the cliff face. Don't worry theres perfect sand under ye and because the water is so shallow in this wee loch the water heats up to sometimes almost hot. once ye get round the cliff theres a 100 metre traingular expanse of flat grass perfect for setting up on and if tide is in then a short beach with golden sands. This is amazing if ye have kids as with the beach actually goes out about 100 at low tide with a flat base, so tide in it's about 2-3 foot deep, it warms up after about an hour of tide coming in, when tide is out you have a massive beach to play on. The view across one side is of the old crinan castle which you can wade across to go see. The other side is the hills and the canal. The best part is that the sun sets in the west and the opening between the hills out the sea is in the west meaning the sun lasts right up until swallowed by the sea.

Man i miss being within a short drive from that place. oh, don't camp on a windy night as you'll be lucky to keep the tent down even with you in it :D

oh mate that's an above and beyond effort...it looks gorgeous

oh it is mate. and ye can be lucky and get a whole area to yerself for the whole day with maybe only a couple of local dog walkers or a fisherman perched on the rocks nearby. Had a guy come over one day asking if he could swap a brown sea trout for a share of our joint, chucked it on the bbq and skinned up :smokebuds:
