Hadn't been out to Chapungu sculpture park to walk the pup for a while, so headed that way today and figured I'd snap a few shots to share with the good folk at AFN. If you ever find yourself in northern Colorado looking for something to do to kill an hour or two, either of the sculpture parks in Loveland are fun exhibits to check out. Hard to say which is my favorite, but I lean toward Chapangu just because the peek into the culture on another continent is an extra bonus to all the great art and beautiful park settings.

Chapungu Sculpture Park
Founded by Roy Guthrie, as African Art Promotions Inc. in 1970, Chapungu Sculpture Park has pioneered the promotion of Zimbabwe Stone Sculpture (Shona Sculpture) and has built up the most important permanent collection of this work in existence. From its humble beginnings as a small gallery in the capital city , Harare, to the 20 acre sculpture park in the outskirts of Harare, and now to its North American location, Chapungu has remained steadfast to its mission statement which is:

  • To promote the Stone Sculptors of Zimbabwe, through world wide exhibitions, documentation, workshops, preservation and sales.

  • To make viewers aware of the expressive power and artistic validity of these contemporary African artists.

  • To bring, through the sculptures, an awareness of the depth and wisdom of the traditional African cultures.

“ This is the birth of a great national art, capable of speaking about the whole creation, from personal and family feeling to the world of spirit, soul and self. It is a thrilling adventure of contemporary art". Art's Review, London, 1990 (Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield, United Kingdom)

(sorry for the bad quality in some of the shots, the low setting sun was making it hell to get a shot with the crappy ole' camera phone)

Couple of views of the park:

One of my personal picks as the most powerful piece in the collection. This one still chokes me up to think about it when I walk by sometimes.

Since the thriving Blackbird population has done a number on the sign, here's what it says:
Coming Home to Die
Nicholas Kadzungura (b. 1967)

The hospital has no drugs. When I was diagnosed as H.I.V. positive, they said, "Go home - we cannot help you." As always, Mother receives me with compassion and understanding.

One of my personal favorites. Dunno why...just really like this sculpture

One for all the healers and Medicine Men/Women on AFN:

Oh yea....and it's a park, so the price is right....FREE!! It's also joined at the hip with the local walking shopping mall, so can get your shop on if that's your thing at the same location. :baked:
