Thanks for the details, now I know where the confusion came from. You were comparing the two fertigation regimes the new one possibly using 40% more than the old, but I thought that you meant that the new system would generate 40% waste relative to input in the new setup, which it cannot.
So at the end of the day I get twice as much run-off on the 8/4 8/4 schedule compared to the 18/6 in a 24 hour period.
