It's like coffee, everybody in the business is growing Arabica around the world because it brings the best net profit. Probably the same with big tea. At some time somebody decided on a strain for its quantity, and overall grow factors, supplied the seeds, and bought the crops. You can still find Kona, Blue Mountain, and other premo coffee at crazy prices and I wouldn't be surprised if good old Panama Red was hiding in some remote village just because the old folks grew up with it and like it.

Panama has some rugged country. I never heard of Panamanian smugglers back in the day so I figure it was coming in via Colombia like most at that time before coke hit big, at least on the east coast. That would narrow a search start to the southern region.

As a Gardener...I was Taught....if you Know the Traits of a cross in the back history of a cross...you could pull them back dominant again...
