I have been away for along time as my last grow was attacked near the end by spider mites and the event caused additional depression. I just had some Super Vanilla Haze from a grobro an decided to start again so today is day 1 and the above seeds are in the plate clam with the wet tissue and I also put a bunch of pure landrace sativa from Cambodia straight in the soil (got plenty of those seeds) and then hopefully I get some males to pollinate the girls.

My last grow was going well and this time I need to prepare well for the spider mites and catch them early so all pre-emptive strike measures I get are appreciated. I have both sun and lights available for this grow and can even use both.

I will be posting regular pics in the hope that you guys help see me through to the sweet end this time.

I am also looking to get more seeds for another grow and my taste is as follows should any body have good recommendations:

1) Smooth on the throat and without a cough effect
2) Great flavor - so far I like Tangerine, Lemon and Vanilla flavoured weeds
3) No skunky stink but a smooth smell that is not obviously weed
4) Energetic, therapeutic and happy smoke

So you guys have probably guessed that I am after a smooth delicious fruity Sativa heavy toke and I shall endeavor to try all of your good recommendations.

so 5 days and 2 beans just cracking with little roots erupting so my first observation is older seeds take longer to crack and these beans are a few years old yet still faithful so far

Due to my last nightmares I am preparing my areas with all safe and semi natural precautions

1) Neem
2) Citronella
3) Hydrogen Peroxide
4) Chrysanthemum extracts

If there are other cool products that are weed safe let me know please as I am not taking any short cuts this time I am prepared for the almost invisible enemy and I have my magnifying class at hand!! So 5 days I wonder how many more days before the girls can become AFN stars? Fungus gnats seem like the major enemy to war with this season so all tips appreciated

For fungus gnats I've seen people use Gnatrol, or microwaving their media to cook any eggs or larvae that could be in it.

best of karma on your second grow ! Fight the fight !

Neem oil/cake works well, they hate that stuff. Nice and organic too, you could put something on top of the soil, some people use sand, I used those small pebble stones.

Last time I had fungus gnats, a layer of Diatomaceous earth over the top of my soil really helped deal with them.

I learnt alot from my failure, I was giving superb nutrients and soil and still battling to give supplements not realizing that the discoloration was being caused by microscopic bugs and so I am back with vengeance

prethyrum seems to be de the deadliest as I have been testing

I will confess I am furfurbishing some old soil with new neutral peat but the old soil is still excellent and I have cleaned it, I will first pot in 1 gallon pots of new soil and then transfer to 10 gallon pots of refurbished soil. My three beans have all cracked a small sprout but the action is still slow, I just transfer them to the pots and their moist warm peat beds as a week in the cracker clam is enough I reckon and the sprout is pointing up through a this layer of socially responsibly sourced peat.

And just to share I never use a universal medium but use both mixes and layers. The pot floor is pure wood chip stuff not only for drainage but to help with an easy switch to the 10 gallon + pots afterwards. Next is my power mix with all the good stuff guano vermiculite, perlite, peat, worm castings and so on and finally there is an inch think layer of pure peat on top for the bean to use as its nursery.

In another grow I have about 50 powerful landrace sativas and if I am lucky 5 will survive, unlike dinafems 100% sprout record for me so far the landracers have often sprouted pathetic spindly plants that often die and that is if they sprout in the first place and if they do can they make it through the soil. I must admit there is no VIP treatment for non-medical beans and it is straight into the soil they go. The most wonderful thing about growing landraces is it really adds to the appreciation given to the creators of these magic medical beans. They are going to all get blistering sun in the day and in the night the dinafems will be moved indoors and put under lots of light, again none of this VIP treatment for the landracers. The only VIP treatment they both receive along their course is nutrients and regular organic bug sprayings, I am even going to Neem-Pyrethyrum-Citronella the surroundings to ward of potential approachers and of course this will help keep the mosquitos from me and them as well as providing a masking smell for my herbal garden. I do not use ferts specifically for canna but I use traditional horticultural solutions I have my organic veging nute and flowering nute as well as a large selection of healthy canna treats. Some nutes I give to the soil and others I spray on the plants.

As soon as they poke their wee little blessed heads through the 2mm of peat on the sprout tips I shall start posting regular pics with extreme close-ups in case analytical review is needed.

And finally I have no sand layer as I do not want to hide bugs, if they are there I need to see them, I have both magnifiers and a powerful torch at hand and I understand regular close inspection and continual prevention is of utmost operational importance.

Exactly 1 week old today and they still have not poked their heads through yet and it is so tense and antagonizing the wait that the tension is excruciating and luckily I have some lemony haze to see me through, I am always worried when I cannot see my little girls and I am dying to share their birth too, in fact I am feeling so sentimental I am even thinking of names for them (I am not going mad am I guys? have you ever named your pet plants?)

and although there is no birth yet the pre-emptive care continues:

1) Regular close monitoring of pots , soil and surroundings for bugs or larvae -vigililence here is mega important
2) lamps ready to be fired up as soon as they poke through
3) Yellow stickies placed all around perimeter to monitor and assess possible bug attack routes
4) Always shower and put on fresh clothes before going near the girls

Just wondering if the gals like spliff smoke blown all over them? could it prevent bugs?

slow and steady win the race!! eimages.jpg

When seeds are just put in the pots..just spray water or keep it moist..dont let the soil dry ..crucial..not wet just moist..yellow leafs in the very start of seedlings are usaually becuase of too much water..its a matter of keeping moist . Ill keep watching ur grow
