Is this a Ph problem or deficiency?

:smoking: Oldbie, how are ya bud? ...As mentioned, ambering comes from THC degrading into CBN, which give a narcotic sleepy aspect to the buzz (certain terpenes do too), so any degradation is a loss of THC potency technically speaking; some ambering is desired by many, to various degree's,... Now the drying environment is critical! That's a whole lecture there mate, and likely lots of info is in the drying/curing section here; drying them in suboptimal conditions will compromise quality... too fast doesn't allow the final breakdown of various components to occur, making for harsh, "green/minty" tastes,.. too high of temp's will drive out terpenes as well, and low RH makes it dry too fast,.... high RH promotes mold and really slows drying down,.. light especially actual sunlight will cause degradation of trich's, uneven drying, loss of terpenes (UV light is destructive to everything).... basically, the best conditions are 65- low 70'sF, about 50% RH, little to no light, mild air circ.,... takes about a week under these conditions to get to the jarring/curing stage,... find a way my friend, this is where many folks ruin months of work! One cannot treat it like simple herbs drying, this is a more exacting process if you want quality results!... yes, I know in other countries they dry in the sun, or open well light drafty rooms, warm weather, etc.,.. but we aren't making Moroccan hash, are we! :eyebrows:

many Thanks @Waira ,
funny you should say "but we aren't making Moroccan hash, are we! :eyebrows:"; this is also my first year making kief; the frozen buds on the appropriate micron screen etc; got a bit obsessed with it all earlier in the year and dug up all my surplus from last year and went-a-trich-harvesting; made kief and pressed it for the first run, then made water hash with the same buds (second run) then looked at all the sodden buds I had left, and thought to myself "I cant be arsed drying this lot", but I didn't want to throw it out, so I made a very quick rough flat cake out of it (in the microwave), had a small piece and blew my head off; there was still plenty of power left after two lots of hash making.
more pearls of wisdom contained in your reply; I didn't know certain terps contributed to the narcotic effect.
I am pretty good at drying under optimum conditions but curing is another matter so will check out the curing section cos its nearly jarring time. man i love the smell of drying weed.
see ya around the forum and many thanks again for all the priceless advice.

next day............checked out the curing post from Thaiman in the curing section-wow! precision instructions; a huge improvement on the more general version in Jorges bible.
love it!

Hi @Oldbie thanks for the compliment! I think the plant only looked slimy because of the zoom lens. Here's the same pic without a zoom

I'm just about to harvest and have been a little unsure of the trichs. Interesting what you say about never checking on them through so many harvests. I tried a bud with only milky trichs a few days ago and it seemed really good to me. I looked back on the same plant 2 days later and loads had already turned amber.... mad rush to flush
.

Hi Cat, yep its true I got a lot of growing and top-shelf weed consumption under my belt without ever knowing a thing about trichomes; I just knew how to grow it well and dry it and manicure it and appreciate it. milky trichs are apparently peak potency, but a lot of people seem to love the heavy narcotic effect that goes with amber. harvest a few bits at each stage and make your own mind up is what I say.
sorry if I got the wrong end of the stick re the slime thing; sure did look a bit gooey; I am glad for your sake that you didn't have a major weed-spoilage problem at that late , and very impressive stage. hope it takes you to where you want to be my friend. party on man.

:smoker1: yeah, ripening can take place at unpredictable rates, so that's why you sweat her daily and do your best to make an estimation of harvest date! Be sure to look at the whole plant, not just one spot, as maturity is also variable around the plant... and be sure it's not sugar leaf you're looking at, as the tend to be further ahead than actual individual bracts (what most call "calyxes", not correct botanically-- an error I've made for years! Flower anatomy is anything but simple)... try to take her after a couple days of no water as well, to lower % water content in plant a bit, and dry faster.... :woohoo1:
Oh really, bracts? I've never heard of that one. It's similar to most people's error about the word vertigo. Many think it means a fear of heights, but that is acrophobia. Anyway, yes, the trichs have really caught me out on the small plant. I may need to harvest otherwise the effect might be too heavy, eh? I'm flushing and only watering once a day rather than twice (in coco) and I may even stop water a couple of days before harvest. Many thanks:toke:

Thanks. Do you keep a journal?

 dang Oldbie, 2 rounds of hashing and it still did that?! Impressive :baked: :haha:.... that first round of fresh kief must be crushing! There are a couple sticky's here on terpenes, I think in the reference section, and general discussion-? I forget! But they are what gives each strain it's distinct high; some are energizing, and I believe certain combos native to Sativa's are a big part of why , same for Indica's and relaxation,... A big part of careful, skilled drying is to reduce the amount of terp's lost during this time, which is already huge- up to 75% or something? That's what I read at least,.. higher temps volatilize the lighter molecular weight terp's... Curing is where more magic happens besides evening out the moisture levels,... many folks like to dry in papaer bags too, BTW, especially in low RH environments, where the bag and surrounding air act as a buffer of sorts, to slow down the evaporation rate and allow those final breakdown process to occur,.. too dry too fast stops this process,...

sorry Cat, I have been asked this before, but truth is I haven't made the decision to document anything to that degree on the forum (I do keep a grow-journal every year), partly out of paranoia, though God knows I revealed plenty to get me into BIG TARUBBLE (Zappa) already and partly I got too much going on at the best of times. no excuse really, I'm just a bit slack sometimes.

thanks @Waira , I got higher RH where I am , which means buds are slower to dry, but that's ok, you get a minor cure with slow drying. 75% terpene loss and still the weed works its magic; what a herb!.

theres a strange yellow light outside, as I gaze beyond the blue green screen of my laptop............or maybe............its the autoBlueberry kicking in. I made some coconut canna-oil with all the seed "bracts" (I like bracts better than calyxes anyway) and sugar trim. this is my first real taste of blueberry; the only DJ short offering I have grown to date was Flo and that didn't ring my bell. just finished de-seeding my autoblueberry; got a nice stash now (crossed it with a DR.Feelgood father which also has Blueberry in its ancestry. ( I can smell it too).

anyway enough yap out of Oldbie.

bye for now man

...damned high RH! I hate dealing with it,.. makes my sphincter wink over mold/rot tryin' to get foothold! :haha: Plus, to get decent drying, you have to elevate the temp more, which leads to guess what-- more terp's lost:doh: .... anyway, I don't know about the 75% thing (trying to recall where I saw that!), seemed high, but I'm betting half at least is typical, mostly the more volatile types... Oh man, fresh bud aroma is sooo delish'! Someday my friend, you gotta try Sweet Seeds Green Poison, any version- - superb aromatics all around, but fresh bud is amazing-- lychee-lime, complex fruits blends, and it hold very close through cure! Plus, it's always dense, resin gummy, veeery potent stuff... your nose will be pasted to her from pot-to-jar, I promise! ... DP's version of BBa is excellent I hear, but I've not tried it yet,... for BB flavahs, I've been growing a once resurrected old strain call Maines Own Blueberry, actually done by current and past Staff here... HighRise seeds... Not sure if it's still bred, but I really hope so! blasting good stuff! I must try the DP-BB sometime soon, it get so much praise,... -that sounds like an excellent cross Oldbie! Dr.FG has earned much praise as well,... A-Train grew a stunning beauty of one earlier this year,... I think it won a BOM? -- that dude has 4 wins already  ..... :pass:
