Hi all! I do understand it is necessary to transplant into larger containers if you planted in a smaller pot to begin with, but is all that transplanting really necessary? Can I just sow the seed into the final size container and let it grow through out it's life cycle in that single container?

That is the prefered method, for autoflowers, though many have found an added benefit to Tier Planting.
Do a forum search for FDs guide.

Have a great day

If you have the room, it's actually beneficial to start in the final pots so transplanting can be avoided. If you're not experienced with transplanting there is the possibility of causing some transplant shock, which can set the plants growth back a few days to a week. I transplant all the time but I use a separate veg area so like to have my plants sexed and ready to go by the time the plants in my flowering rooms are done. I don't have room in my veg area for 3 gallon pots, so start in smaller ones and transplant the females.

If you only have one small grow area, that needs to remain clandestine, and you aren't experienced in transplanting, I would go straight to the final pot with seed.
There is a definite learning curve with autos, they have not been forgiving to me.
Every little setback seems to become exponential when you have more than one mistake.
It can be quite discouraging.
I would make your first auto attempt as simple & easy as possible.

Great advice everyone! I will sow the seed in the final container until I get the hang of this :-)
