Humidifier White Dust

Hi all,

My humidifier is creating white dust, I know distilled water can solve this, but is it actually an issue?

Will it harm the plants?

Would water from a dehumidifier be any better than tap water?

Thanks very muchly :)
If you're using spring or any non distilled bottled water it is possible for a humidifier to pick up spread solids trapped in the water. You could try changing the wicking filter if it has one, or any other filter on it, clean it out really well, theres probably calcium build up on some parts. Then yes making the switch to distilled water will definitely help eliminate that. It will also help extend the life of the filters as well.

It has a sponge filter, though the humidifier is only a week old.

My tap water here is plant friendly and unmetered, so I'd prefer to avoid buying distilled water.

If it doesn't harm the plants then I may just leave it as is. Theres no powder visually on the plants anyway.

Same here :)
Due to available space (small tent) I had to set up my ultrasonic cell outside the tent.
Passive intake to get mist inside

I thought about doing this, but my humidifier has a built in humidity sensor so has to be in the tent to read correctly.

My tent is a 2x4, so when fully potted there's still a corner free for the humi. :dancer:

Buy an evaporative humidifier. Problem solved.
I use an evaporative humidifier and still have a problem with the carbonate dust on the plants, fans and carbon filter if I use tap water. I use RO water now.

The problem with getting it on the plant is that it attracts moisture that can then lead to Bud Rot in late flower. So yes it is a problem.

The whole humidifier may be less than a week old but it doesnt take long for scum and build up to grow in a humidifier especially if the watee going in it isnt as close to pure as you can get. When I started using tap in my humidifier I had to clean it once a week because of scum build up from what was in my tap water.

And theoretically, you don't want the dust contaminating buds, such as settling or sticking to trichomes. If this is a valid concern(?), maybe switch to RO, rainwater or dehumidifier condensate during bloom.
