How to top dress?

This is a future question for my next grow.. but with the grow im on now the roots have completely covered all of my soil so im not sure how to top dress that since i can only get about a 1/2 inch of loose soil from the top to mix it in if even that... Arent you supposed to top dress then mix it in the first 2inches or so of soil?

I mean it really doesn't matter mix as well as you can the water will bring it down. Especially if its something that is already composted like a dry fertilizer like Stonington blend Coast of Maine. Now kelp will take longer to breakdown. But it eventually still will as long as your soil is biologically active. Could always feed some yogurt kombucha etc in your water too make it more active. Things that are more dust will absorb easily.

With the grow im on now i wouldnt have room but with my next one i will be top dressing so ill leave some room to add more. Thanks!

No need to add soil when you top dress, I use buildasoil craftblend and buildaflower and I first add the craftblend and just scratch it on the top then add a layer of the buildaflower then water and boom that’s all I do.

I like to mix some compost or castings with my top dress.
