I see this subject coming up all over the place, and lots of skilled growers have varying opinions on the best way to start a soil grow. So I thought I'd start a poll to see how the numbers shake out. If you can, please add a comment about why you like the method you're using, if you've tried others, etc.

I'm currently using the tiered method mainly because it's easy for me. I'm still learning autos and soil mixes, and having the seedlings in a small cup gives me more control over the watering when they're young. It also allows me to evaluate the plant before committing to a larger pot, which is helpful since I have a small grow space. For my previous outdoor grows I've always germed right into the final pot, and I'll probably try that method with autos once I've dialed in my grows a little more.

Forgot to mention that I'm starting off in paper towels before moving to the party cup.

I'm germing in paper towels then move to rapid rooters. When they sprout from the rooters they go to their final pot. Sucks if you get alot of males thou. I have tried transplanting from smaller pots and screwed it up and and ended up with some stunted plants. I water my 3 gallons before planting the rooters. Takes up to 2 weeks before they need watering again. No more stunted autos for me this way.

I paper towel germ, then into final container, the least moving of the plant and root system the better I feel

Straight into the soil...like mother nature intended...:wiz:

Most times final pot..sometimes transplant

I start in jiffy pcks, soon as I see green I plant into 8" tall styro-foam cups I get from SteaknShake. After they sex I plant in soiless 3gal sm/pot. Tried & true for me until I made my own seed & I've found Jackals way to work well for me minus rapid rooter. So how should vote?

Straight in the pots. Used to use Jiffy plugs and a propagation heating mat. But I found out, that for me, straight in the pots, water and cover w/plastic wrap for incubation. Then put them up in the light and wait. 3 to 7 days, there you go. No transplanting or nothing...

Hell, I guess you're 'Other'. :D Do you pull the plants completely out of the cup or tier it?

You may have the best method because it gives you a reason to buy lots of Steak n Shake milkshakes. :dance2:

Pull it outa the cup, I like to see the roots..hehe

I agree w/ ripster:thread:

Straight into final pot for me. No other reason than laziness and being uncomfortable handling the root system.
