Hollow stems, good, bad?

I have no science behind this more than "Dad says" right so I don't know.
When the main stem closes the plant can't take up (much) water or nutrition anymore. In my picture you can see what in my mind means that the buds would have loved some more nutes and water since their stems are open, but they couldn't pull much food because the main stem is closed because the plant is dying.
