I have blueberry f5 regular photoperiod seeds. Not feminized from dj short. Says on the package male and female parents were f4 blueberry and same lineage since 1998. So from what I understand dj short used f4 blueberry male and f4 female to make f5 seeds which I got am I correct? So if I use these f5 seeds and use pollen from the male to pollinate and make seeds on the female will they be classified as F6 seeds then? Or will it be the same exact strain as the parents and only be f5? I'm a little confused

Yes.. That is how the f5s were made. Since you are not the breeder, and you aren't doing any kind of hunting or selecting of traits to further or improve the line, what you would be creating is your own brand new f1 version of Dj Shorts Blueberry that is based on the two plants that YOU chose to pollinate.

There regular seeds. So I was gonna use the male pollen from the blueberry male and pollinate the female blueberry and all the auto strains running in my tent as well. Red Poison. Gorilla Cookies. White Widow. Purple Nuggets and zkittlez are all the autos I plan to pollinate along with the blueberry. So will the blueberry I make seeds of be different than its parents or inbred or? I never messed with regular photos and new to learning about breeding also.

I know I cud clone to keep it going. But I wanted some back up seeds in case something happened I didn't wanna lose her so wanted to make new seeds but wasnt sure what the outcome would be. I'd like some seeds for my indoor grows and for trying my first outdoor grow when spring and summer come also so I plan to use the male blueberry pollen on everything to see what happens.

What you're doing and what most of use do is called pollen chucking or doing a seed run... generally speaking your seeds will be like it's parents.. But you have no clue what the parents are like.. And if you're like most of us, your going to kill off the male once you get pollen... So the most you could possibly know is what the mom is like after a few runs of her.. And if you don't clone the mom and run it a few times, you won't even know that much.. Breeding is what DJ Short did to get to f5... He grew hundreds of seeds.. Many several times.. Then found the traits he like of each F generation until it was at f5 where it is now, and to his liking... I think Dj short has 13 seeds in his packs so how do you know that this female you have is the best female out of that pack? That's why it's called pollen chucking.. We're just chucking pollen onto plants with no expectations or plans except to get seeds. Breeding is well thought out and takes years to do properly. Most people who start breeding start by hunting through a few packs of a strain a few times to find a few keepers with the specific traits they are looking for, then they go from there. Absolutely nothing wrong with pollen chucking and making some seeds! I recommend everyone do it at some point.. But the seeds will express whatever traits the parents do.. It's your job to select those traits in the two plants you choose to use.

Same conversation in a different thread

The punnet squares only tracks two traits for the possible combinations in the cross. There are up to 25,000 genes that form a whole heck of a lot of traits. I think work is being done to map it but that is way over my pay grade.

There are:
the total cannabis genome haploid size is 818 Mb for female species and 843 Mb for males. The size difference is accounted for by the larger Y chromosome in male plants. 818 x 1,000,000 base pairs 818,000,000 in the female plant and 843,000,000 in the male

Yep, pollen chuckers:goodluck:

Thanks to the both of you! I had bought a 4 pack of the blueberry and 4 pack of the flo dj short created. Was a 4x4 pack. Not 13 seeds like you said. I think the seed bank split em up like that. I am hoping I get a good female out of the 4 seeds tho and will start the flo seeds in the near future as well to make some blueberry flo cross.

Thanks for defining it. It should be said especially since I have seen threads around different forums where people seem to think they are breeders just because they chucked some pollen. Not to mention the misinformation that gets spread because of these posts. I’ve been chucking pollen for about 5 years now, created many seeds and would never consider myself a breeder. Now that I’m retiring I wish I had the room to actually try some real ‘breeding‘ projects.

Agreed. I'm not a breeder (yet) but I am going to chuck some pollen and do some breeding projects to where I start with f1 and work my way to f5 or f6 stable genetics. Once my pollen chucking happens I will use some of my new creations to start with. And work on whatever strain comes out the best from there and then keep adding other traits that I find good in other plants and keep breeding until I'm satisfied. I'm ok with it taking me a decade to release my first real breeding project strain. I'm young and got lots of time. Thanks for clarifying this though for sure. I dont want to say I am a breeder just cuz I chucked pollen at some plants and got some new seeds. I'm sure that's how shitty breeders make it to the bottom of the list.

Watch carefully... Blueberry is well known for herms... it's just the Gene's, but its there... so, smooth runs, no light leaks etc. Sometimes they just pop up too so eye out for sacks and nanners. Ran it a long ways back, but I was in a group that started 50 plants and ended with one mom between us all. Never had a nanner or sack from her or her cuts. Several of the discarded plants were tossed due to hermaphroditic issues.
