Thanks for the welcome many of you offered. I am getting to a critical stage with my plant, and I know any advice I get here will be most helpful. It was suggested I make a journal, so here it is.

I had the idea of growing regular plants, but I was given some auto seeds, and told it would be easier than all the set up/expense of growing traditional, so I went with it. I have very limited space, and even less denero so I got a good deal on a five gallon DWC unit for indoors. I did build a small grow area using pvc pipe and mylar. I also was able to obtain a 4 foot, 4 bulb T5 HO-24, Sunblaze. I have 4 grow lights in it currently, but have two bloom lights ready to go, which should be soon. I have two pumps for air attached to two medium size air stones, and of course a submersible pump.

I realize some of what I have done/doing may not be in keeping with how it should be done, but I have such limited resources, so I did things as others suggested and what I needed to do to make things work.

I placed my seeds in a cup of tap water, kept them in the cupboard.

June 9 - In a few days, they sprouted at which point I placed them right into hydro friendly plugs and into the hydro unit. Using FloraNova Grow at bottle recommended strength for new plants, 2 teaspoons for the two gallons I am running in reservoir.

June 10 - Altho having the hydro in the coolest part of the house with the most air flow, had a hard time regulating the water temp. Wants to be at 78 to 80 F. Had it on plastic covering the carpet, decided to put a granite cutting board under it for stability and hoping it would help temps. Stable, but didn't change temps. Placed a plastic dome over seeding for humidity.

June 13 - Have been running the lights 18 on, 6 off for entire grow. Water close to 80, room temp 78. Seedlings (2) are growing. Tried ice cubes to see how that worked to bring down water temp. Does but is fairly short lived, as one can imagine.

June 14 - Roots of both are through bottom of plugs. Through entire grow temps same. 80F for water, 72 to 79 room. Humidity for room is 30% to 35%. (live in desert)

June 17 - #1 plant 1/2", #2 plant still partially in seed. Changed reservoir water.

June 18 - #1 has 2nd set of leaves with third starting. #2 just getting 1st set.

June 20 - #1 is 2.5", #2 is 3/4".

June 23 - #1 roots are thru netpot and into water. Changed nute water. Used 1/2 teasopoon more than last for nutes.

June 29 - #1 5", #2 3".

June 30 - Both have pistols and both have roots to the bottom of the 5 gallon res. Ran 2 gallons of pH'd water with 1 oz of Clerex, ran for one hour, flushed with plain pH water, then added fresh nutes, 2.50 teaspoons. Also, from a article I read, if you have root temps over optimum, add 1 teaspoon per gallon of 3% hydrogen proxide to stop any root rot and to give more oxygen. With warm root temp, said that this will help. Plants seem to be ok with it.

July 4 - #1 7", #2 4". Drained water (have been using tap water, switched to 1 gallon tap, 1 gallon RO water.) 3.5 teaspoons nutes and 2 teaspoons HP.

July 6 - Drinking a lot of water. pH is checked everyday, today noticed pH a bit low so adjusted using RO water to also replenish. A couple fan leaves showed some over using of nutes, (a couple ever so slightly curl and a couple with small brown spots). Hoping liter of RO water with pH adjust will help. Seemed to work.

July 7 - #1 9". #2 6".

July 8 - #1 10". #2 6.5". Ran one gallon pH RO water with one teaspoon Clerex after emptying nute water. Then did a flush of that water, then another flush of plain water after running plain water for about 30 minutes. Went back to only using 2 teaspoons of nutes, even though bottle calls for 4 teaspoons. (2 teas per gallon) Got worried about a couple of the leaves showing some nute problem. Used 4 teaspoons HP.

So that is where I am at. I am using Muddy advice, I still have grow lights and have not switched to bloom nutes, even though flowers started to show. Am hoping to wait one more week, if possible. I am taking pictures right now, day 30-31, and see what you all think. I will add phots in moment.

Your plant is looking great. I'd say you are right on track.

You might try wrapping your bucket with some insulating material like Reflectix. I know a few people have done this and it seems to help keep the water temp down.

looks a little like my mi5 ive got growing at moment :peace:

hey TG the ladies are looking great... i know what your up against growing in the desert im in the Mojave Desert DWC can be tuff in the summer... like Muddy said insulating the container is a must to try to keep the water temps down... if you roots are in the water take the water pump out of the bucket you dont need it any more... that will help with the water temps... i put the container inside a larger container then i place freezer packs around the inside container... just keep on keepin on your doing great.

TOKE OUT

Very good ideas...thanks. I turned the pump off after reading this. I didn't want to get in there are take pump out, I am nervous about pulling around in there. I have a bunch of ice packs, I just need to get a larger container, but I will find something and try it! And I may have some insulation. Then I will watch temps, see if I can turn the pump back on...I always understood the water pumping up and trickling down helps with adding oxygen to the nute water? That is the reason I say I would like to have it on, but if not necessary with the two air stones.?

So now my hope is getting help with when to switch lights and nutes. The 14th July will be end of week 5. Muddy said to watch and see when vertical growth slows/stops. I will measure every day and watch closely. Since the type of plant is a mystery, (maybe m15?? smells like downy liquid or something kinda sweet like that) and Muddy said the slowing should be week 5-6 depending on type...I think I will just have to watch the growth slow down. Then switch. Am really nervous going into this part! But feel better that I actually have people I can ask for help/suggestions!

I don't know if you can see the other plant in there with the big one...this little sister has always been behind her big sister from the start. Being a mother/grandmother I did not have the heart to just forget her, so I planted with big sister. She looks same strain, but using a small lighting system, little sister is getting less light as I am concentrating all I have on big sister. I am thinking you fellows may just say to just pull the damn thing out, but I just can't. She has tried so hard to grow. And looks healthy. I will take your suggestions and see what I can come up with for root temps. Great ideas. Thanks.

i always pull (at least unplug) the water pump after the roots are 2'' into the water... you have two air stones so the roots will get all oxygen they need... cooler water holds more oxygen... now granny let this Ol Gpa tell you what to do with the little one... let it grow and watch what happens so you dont feel bad about pullin it, and youll know what to do the next time... i use GH but never more then half strength on my DWC autos.

TOKE OUT

No reason to be nervous. I still keep a ruler in my grow area and am always checking my plants. You should be getting good, strong vertical growth at this point, maybe an inch a day or more. It's pretty noticeable when it starts to slow. It will drop to half inch a day, then a quarter. Just keep measuring them daily.

Your node spacing looks good. How above the plants are your lights?

Autos are still relatively new so the strains aren't fully stabilized yet. It's pretty common to get 2 or 3 different types of plants from a given group of seeds. Runts are also fairly common, which might be what your other one is. Don't give up on it. I've had some give me an oz. or more.

you can knock a few degrees off your res temps by placing your air pumps in a little dorm size fridge.
just set them in and shut the door, you get enough airflow around the wires and hoses. no need to modify the fridge in any way. just turn the thermostat up to "max cool".
the little fridge is a great place to stash your seeds, pollen and extra jugs of cool water to top off the res.

I took some photos tonight after I got off work and read all your comments. I will post them. I think the fridge idea is a good one. Am going to look for one, although I might not be able to obtain until my next grow. But what a great idea! I am going to get the Reflectix at Lowes today and I do have the pump off. The temp was down to 75, so that is a 5 degree drop. I have plenty of nutes, so by Wednesday I can change them out and use cooler water, no pump, insulation...I just might make the temps needed.

Yes, an inch a day on the big sister. Little sister may be a bit less, like about 1/4 to 1/2, and that may be due to less light in the last 2 weeks. To keep BS from hitting the lights, I have had to raise, but have the light unit on a bit of an angle to try to get more light to LS. You can see that in the photos. The tallest node on BS I have kept at a little less than 2 inches. T5 has such little heat, but putting my hand between the node and the light, and I do feel a slight heat at about 1.5 inches, and she has been putting on an inch a day for a week. I wish I had put LS in seperate container, but didn't have one. In photos you can see I have rocks proping the side nodes up because the fixture is narrow...I had no idea she would get so bushy, ...I will get dowels when I pick up insulation.

So the tallest node in about 1.5", tiny bit less, and for LS, the closest I can get the tallest node is 7".

BS won't wait for LS, so I am concerned if LS will flower along with BS? I guess she will have no choice? I do feel better knowing she should be ok, although I wish I could get more height. I could run the light hanging from one chain and only hit LS for a few hours, I work so when away, I have the light as you see it in the photos if that would do any good. Hope photos help give visual on diff in size. LS is in the front, kind of hard to see.
