those 300 watt old style Mars lights are decent. I have a pair. I use them now mostly to fill in light where needed for coverage. But I've done grows with them that were good. Mine are 3 years old and still working. Nice lights for those on a budget.

I always compare it to a computer. Custom gaming computers can have 700 to 1k watt power supplies so your no where near raising any red flags.

I set a limit of 1200 watts for my room. i'm a bit over, but my new DIY light will take it back below the 1000 watt mark. right now I have 5 lights to cover 2 4'x4' area and a 32"x32"x60" tent. And I'll be cutting back the number of lights from 5 to 3. But its taken me years to be ready for this. Its a slow progression.

2 are great for a 3'x3' area, they don't quite cover a 4'x4' well enough but will work.
