I used the method Mephisto suggested on their website. Dampened toilet paper with distilled water inside dvd case on top of the dvr. After 36 hours, 3 had tails, 2 were cracked open. I buried them about 1/4" down in the top layer which is fox farm happy frog a little over 48 hour ago. I set my light about 12" above them and turned it on about half way up to keep them warm. I believe I read that seedlings like it at about 75 degrees, 75% RH. I got some cocktail type cups, drilled a few holes in them and have kept the soil under them moist.

I have a few questions:

Should I have left the 2 seeds that were only cracked open in the dvd case longer?

How long should the tails be when putting them in the soil?

I think I read the pointy side of the seed should point down when planted. Do I need to bury the root facing down?

Nothing has popped up yet. How long does it usually take before they pop through?

After first burying them in soil, how wet does the dirt under the cup need to be? Do I need to let it dry before re-watering?

Can anyone help me with some tips?

Hi @Belle

Germination methods are numerous and IMPO superfluous to mother nature's methods . 1/4 inch deep is a little shallow. The friction of pushing up through the soil helps to dislodge the seed shell. 1/2" depth has worked well for me.

Keep seeds and soil evenly moist but not soggy. Do not let it dry out.

How long does it take.............. not up yet............................... not up yet.................................. not up yet.................? Forever when you are watching :haha:.

Usually only a couple of days when they have a tap root?

I just put a seed 1/2" deep in a starter cube, keep it warn and moist and in 3 to 24 days I get a seedling? Most are in the 3 to 5 day range. I grew some landrace African Malawi and it took 24 days to germinate.

Patients and :goodluck:

Be patient. They are sending roots down into the medium. You will be fine. Dont overwater them.

A well draining medium is important as the water drains its pulling in O2 ...that's why it's so important to know your medium first, then a cheap moisture meter will help a lot.
A plant will survive a drought easier than a drowning.

I tried to germ a expert gorilla it cracked after 24 hours in water I then put into paper towel but after 4 days no tap root it normally only takes me 2 days for this to work. So I gave up put the seed in some soil with another plant and forgot about it.mean while I germinated a gelato#33 transferred it to dwc. Then today 2 an a half weeks later the gorilla seed has sprouted I’m over the moon as I never expected it to sprout. So never give up hope.

I never do the paper towel method. Only seeds that ever failed me were done that way. I scuff them, and plant them in the soil. I use an spray bottle to water in the seed so as not to disturb the seed. Put a clear solo cup over them. A few sprays of water every other day or so. Never had a seed fail that way. Nice thing about Autos is all the medium we plant them in. Pretty hard to over water if the medium is not made out of clay and mud.

What’s the normal time frame for your process.

4 or 5 days to break ground and show her pretty little head.

heya belle :toke: and well, let'z see now...oh, germination questionz....ugh  (he sez, jokingly  ) sorry, me not laffin at u ;) me jus totally baked atm, and jus havin a laugh in general at how downright sillee everything getz sumtimez, that'z all...me do that quite often :jointman:

anyhoo, the germ process, like everything else, is done differently by diff growerz, so all i can do here is jus relay how i meself do it  first tho, i'd like u to alwayz keep in mind that, regardless of whatever process we stoned humanz introduce to it, a bean will sprout, all by itself, by simply stickin it in the dirt, keepin said dirt moist, and...yup, that'z it, lol :smoking: it might take an xtra day or so, but by simply keepin the soil moist by mistin it 2-3 timez daily, it'll sprout generally every time ;) but, i digress...

yes, i've done it that way, and with success, but most o' the time, i jus put the bean in to soak in a small jar of spring water for 36 hrz...sumtimez they pop out a tail, sumtimez they don't...duzn't matter...nor duz it matter if the bean has sunk...most o' the time, they don't, tbh, cuz they get caught in the surface tension...makez it that much ezier to get out, hehe ;) i then gently retrieve said bean from said surface of water with a plastic spoon, setting it down on the table...i've already got me pot of soil ready to go & sittin there, so i jus mist the top center with a couple squirtz, then take the butt end of a 3/16" drill bit, having marked a line that'z roughly 1-1/2 timez the length of the bean and/or bean with tail, and make a hole...and now comez the really tricky part, lol, and disclaimer -> i def do not recommend this, unless u can be half-ass sure of havin a half-ass s t e a d y hand, haha :nono:  it involvez takin a pair o' good ol hemostatz (reg tweezerz will work) and, after pozitioning said hemoz in an orientation that will have the taproot, or at least the pointy end if no tail, pointing downward, then -> g e n t l y clasping said lil fragile bean & placing it in the hole...with the open-air pathway between the spoon & the hole def bein the trickiest part of it all, lol  but, i again digress...:smoking:

to be fair, the lil bean could also jus be gently "dropped" into the hole directly from the spoon...but meh, that'z "too ez" for me, lol  anyhoo, after said bean has been depozited in said hole, a wee bit of soil is gently brushed over to cover it in, a couple more mist squirtz are given & it'z a done deal  i too have been uzin the happy frog lately, with a wee bit of peat tossed in & xtra perlite, and the bean getz planted in a peat center, so that the first few dayz of the lil rootz can be in a neutral medium, before hitting the frog ;) i cover the pot with a great lil dome i scored at dollar tree, then jus keep both the soil & underside of dome misted 3-4 timez a day, with rainwater if i have it...then, uzually within 1-3 dayz, they break into the brave new world & it'z off to the racez! :yay: oh, and no, i don't presoak my soil or any o' that jazz...i make it up in the pot around a day ahead of time uzually, straight outa the bag, set it in me grow clozet to get up to temp & call it good, lol  :coffee:

now, u'll notice that throughout that entire dissertation, i made no mention of the paper towel step...oh no! :yoinks:  well, that'z simply becuz i meself don't do that...for one thing, it'z jus plain unnecessary, lol, but the main reazon is becuz, as the taproot growz out, the lil "feelerz" that come off it can/do ezily grow right into the paper towel, and when it comez time to remove said bean/root from said paper towel...well, can u fill in the blankz-? lol :rolleyes2: i'd rate it right up there with a bean gettin crushed by an unsteady pair o' hemoz, uh-huh

again, this has all been jus me own 2 ctz & take from it what u will or won't  but fwiw, me had a blast writin it, hehe :jointman: Up The Ironz & have a great day! :headbang: ppp

@Mañ'O'Green Ya. I feel like a bit of a crackhead checking it over and over.

@automan2 Do you have a brand you'd suggest or anything?

@Snip Good grief that's a long time!

@420Forever A friend of mine suggested throwing them in a cup of water like that. I might one or 2 like that next round. Great info!

Thank you all for your time and information! One finally popped up!
