I started my first ever grow with materials I already had for the most part. I bought seeds and a timer. I know my soil and lights are not ideal but they will get me started and I won't be heavily invested if I find that growing is not for me. I've been lurking here and reading allot and decided I should start a grow journal so my first post isn't in the infirmary if I should need help from members here, LOL.

So, this is what I started with.

Northern Lights Blue Auto by Delicious seeds. Just one plant for first grow.

2.7 gal standard pot.

Soil is 50% Miracle Gro General Purpose Garden Soil and 50% Natures Care Organic Potting mix(by Miracle Gro). Yes, I know the general consensus is that Miracle Gro is not ideal. It's what I have on hand so it was free. Also, the general purpose mix time release nutes is only good for up to 3 months so I'm hoping it will be better than the 6 month time release of the potting soil.

Well water. Hard water with a ppm of 287. Mostly calcium with other unknown minerals. I do not know the ph.

Lights for now is T8 florescence with 3200k bulbs. 4 4' tubes at 28watts each. I had these sitting around. I will be buying and adding one of the cheaper 300w equivilent led lights(Mars Hydro, etc) in a couple weeks, hopefully before full flower. 20/4 schedule.

Closet. I had one already, LOL. Bonus, it has an electric outlet in it for some reason.

Temp is 75f. Humidity 42%

I dropped the bean directly in soil in the pot it will grow in. Plant is 1 week since germination today.

Problems to solve already; soil came with fungus gnats. I knew this when I started so I've anticipated having to get rid of them. There are only a few so far and I have treated the soil with hydrogen peroxide once. I may have to treat again the next time I water. I also have sticky tape to catch adults.

I'll be back in a few to try and post a pic.

Thanks for reading and I'm always open to advice and any help I can get. My goal is simply to have fun and raise/harvest a healthy plant for personal use.

Looks healthy.
I'd recommend a cheapish ph meter from amazon... The cheaper ones aren't all that bad. I use them because I always wind up dropping them and screwing them up.

Thanks @Samwell

Yeah, I've been lurking for a couple weeks @archie gemmill and reading all I can. Just going for a healthy plant, as opposed to a dead plant, this first time. It'll be fun to add better soils, lst, lights and such as needed on future grows and come up with a system that works best for me.

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody.

I want to do something like that but I have no idea how much the wife and I will go through. Until recently I have only smoked rarely and socially and the wife had never used. Getting older now(early 50's) and we've found that a bit of THC/CBD gives us a bit better quality of life. Sound sleep, less stress and less overall aching in the bones. In our state it's best if we don't get our bud from other sources. I'll grow it here and it will stay here. Minimize the risk.

I plan to pop two seeds after this grow because I need to add a daytime strain and then I can stagger my grows when I know how much we'll need.
