Fast Buds FastBuds Mega-Grow Journal - Rhyce Saroni grows Northern Express

I will grow these using truly living organic methods...

For my supersoil, I started with Coast of Maine, Stonington Blend and added bio-char, oyster flour, diatomaceous earth, rock flour/dust, greensand and soft rock phosphate... with the second generation, I've added more bio-char, lobster compost, ground crabs, Peruvian seabird guano, langbeinite, sea 90, kelp, alfalfa meal, fish bone meal, diatomaceous earth, beneficial nematodes and mycorrhizae/bacteria crystals...
Hullo again Rhyce

I've been doin' me due diligence with respect to makin' up soil the organic way.
Learning of cations and their exchange and availability of nutrients and C/N ratios and...... right. Buncha stuff. Anyways, here's a question I've yet to find an answer to.

With your above quotated passage for example; how do you determine how much of any given amendment to use?
If your reply is along the lines of "by feel" or "with experience..." or the ilk you will cause me to cry.

Thankee (-:

I'm happy to tell you how I got here... First I started watching a bunch of videos on YouTube about organic gardening in general and came across this great resource that I used as my resource...

https://www.youtube.com/user/growingyourgreens

Then I purchased a bunch of the stuff they recommend using and a few bags of Coast of Maine, Stonington Blend supersoil....

I kind of reverse engineered the soil, made sure that I had all the components and more for a second generation. My first generation soil just had a couple of additives, greensand, rock phosphate, bone meal & rock dust... after I observed the first generation plants, I added more P, K and compost with good success... so I added that, bio-char and a couple of more things to replenish and re-liven the gen 2 mix... Second generation is much better than the first... My only concern right now is how I'll replenish in generation three by accounting for the half life of what's in there now... oy... lol

I've added everything according to what it said on the box for 'containers'... like 1 tbs/gallon of soil... even after doing this I always add at least half a bag more of compost too so my mix is always conservative... I will break down all the stuff sometime soon and explain what it's major purpose is as even though it may list some N, P or K, it's major purpose in the mix is to do something else...

Bottom line, I always did a lot of video watching and reading to learn and then when I used stuff, I just followed the directions on the box as to how much to add... maintaining properly will be tricky... time to start doing more soil tests and reading...

The videos from GrowingYourGreens really taught me everything I needed to know in order to get going and succeed...

I hope my wordy answer fills in some gaps as to how I've managed to get my soil to where it is...

Best wishes for success!

Gasp!
Read the directions? LOL (-:

What to add to a mix based on a given components NPK and mineral content and what it adds to the whole is where I'm at just now.
I've a few lists of amendments, one a sticky in the Organics forum here, that I'm using along with articles and forum discussions to get a grasp of amendment combos. Every time I get to where I think I might possibly have a glimmer I come up against..... how much?

And this guy sez to read the directions. (-;

I too have reversed engineered a few recipes. Spreadsheet city baby! And more often as not the ratios and or amounts per cu.ft. etc are similar regardless the grower.

Your approach of gradually adding different amendments based on results, over time, is more along a KISS approach then I've been allowing meself. Must'nt overthink otd.
S'ok, I'm off to the land of youTube for further edumacation.

ETA: as I understand things here at AFN here's where I lay a :slap: on ya, Thankee (-:

Many thanks for the slap! You surely sound like you are on the right path...

Oh yes one last thing is that I do use handfuls but I know how much that is... part of the fun of learning the TLO craft is that eventually you're like an accomplished baker in that you just 'know' after a while that if you add 'this' it makes 'that' happen... really fun and over time it's more fun to make your own special amendment discoveries and incorporate them into your mix. I like experimenting by top dressing 30 plus day old plants... if it goes south you can always remove the top soil... lol

Cheers!

Here are the little ones...
