So here's my first grow journal. I hope it's in the right location.

Seed: 1 Think Different
Started: 3/22/14
Tent: Gorilla 2'x2.5'x7'
Ventilation: Hydrofarm Active Air 6" inline 400 cfm
Lighting: 45w 5500k CFL for seedling, then Mars II 700 LED
Pot: 20L Airpot
Soil: Fox Farm Coco Loco and perlite
Food/supplements: Boogie Brew Tea, Worm Gold Plus, Pure Protein (codfish hydrolysate), Sea-90 (sea trace minerals), and some blackstrap molasses.

Purpose: This is the first grow that I'll be doing by myself. I've been reading the book Teaming with Microbes and now want to do an organic soil grow with microbes in mind. I plan to use dry organic soil fertilizers such as the worm castings and codfish mentioned above in conjunction with Boogie Brew Tea. Given that my soil seems to already contain composted forest humus, bat and seabird quanos, earthworm castings and kelp meal as food sources, I plan to use only teas in the beginning of my grow to help the microbes establish themselves. This way, they can work with the plant in processing and sharing the foods and minerals already there. As time goes on, I will probably top dress the soil with worm castings or fish as needed. I also am interested in seeing how the Mars II units from Topled perform. Seems like a quality light for an incredible bargain.

Catching up:

I started a Dutch Passion Think Different seed from Attitude nine days ago. I soaked it in bubbling, aerated water for 6 hours then put it in a plastic container with a moist paper towel for about a day. I let the container sit ontop of my cable modem to keep it slightly warm. Once I saw the tail pop out, I waited 12 hours then popper her about a quarter inch under soil in her new home.

I prepped the soil a week before planting. I filled the airpot with straight Coco Loco (CL) 1/4 of the way. From there, I added a bit more perlite for the next 1/4 of the container and continued until my top layer which was 50/50 CL and perlite to give the seed a gentle start. I then brewed a tea to help condition the soil and wake up the mycorrhizae and bacteria that came with the CL. So I scooped some fresh CL, put it in a 2 liter soda bottle with dechlorinated water and a few teaspoons of molasses. (I used my soil mix and molasses as a tea because my Boogie Brew hadn't arrived yet.) I hooked up two cheap air pumps with 2 airstones each to really aerate and agitate the mix. I waited 18 hours then used the fresh brew, unfiltered, to drench the soil in my Airpot. Interestingly, a day later I came back to my brew vessel with the soaked airstones still sitting in it (lazy) and noticed thousands of fine white hairs projecting outward from all sides of the stones. I dont know how to identify soil fungi and bacteria, but it was nice to see that my brew from just the soil mix was very active.

So after having popped the sprouted seed into soil, it took about 36 hours for her to pop up. She was still wearing her seed hat, which was fine. She threw it off the next day and unfolded some nice beginner leaves. Shortly after, the first set of true leaves began to form.

I've been keeping the temps 71-79, mostly 73 F. The humidity has been a little tricky. I've finally gotten it leveled out in a range of 65-80% RH. It usually floats at about 72%. This is all with a small desk fan that barely puts out a breeze to gently jostle the plant and cool the CFL bulb. I've put the bulb into a worklight reflector and have recently moved it about 6 inches from the top of the seedling. Her second set of true leaves are starting to come out.

That's about where I'm at now. Pictures are on the way!

If I've left out any important information, then let me know. Questions are welcome. Thanks for stopping by.

All this sounds really promising, I am sure you'll have a happy plant in there. Going to keep an eye on this journal.

Hey Dr Frog,

Nice to see you got your grow on.

New Life begins.

:Sharing One:

You are pretty organized

Peace

Day 10

Watered with a fresh batch of Boogie Brew since the soil was nearly dry. Brewed the tea for 6 hours then added a 1/4 dose of Pure Protein and a pinch of Epsom salt and let it brew an additional 12 hours. There was a thick layer of foam on top. I drenched the soil til a bit started to drain out the bottom. Also misted the undersides of the leaves with 1/4 strength Pure Protein. The Pure Protein says there's no way to burn your plant at any concentration, even seedlings and cuttings. They recommend using it right from the start. Even so, I decided to start low and work upwards. (Plus it's kinda smelly)

I'm trying to slowly raise the temperature and lower the humidity now that the soil is moist and the plant isn't so vulnerable. I figure it'll help the plant to transpire a little more and keep the soil from staying soggy. I'm thinking around 75-78 F and ~60% RH. Can anybody advise me on what kind of temperature and humidity range would be best for this stage of the plant's life?

Day 11

My inline fan arrived today! I hung it up in the tent and connected it to a speed controller. So far, it's working great. No vibration noise, just a whoosh of air and a slight electronic buzz from having it connected to the speed controller (think like refrigerator humming).

I've hung the fan using three bungee cords to give it a sturdy hang and to minimize vibration.

There's a view of the general setup. I've placed a 4" flexible duct in the opposite corner from the exhaust fan. The duct runs right to the top of my Airpot, held in place with a chopstick. This is providing my plant with a gentle breeze. The other end of the duct sits above my humidifier to grab some moisture before blowing over the plant. My small fan is now being used to blow air around the Airpot. I guess it'll help the soil to dry a little quicker since the plant won't be able to draw out all that moisture on it's own at this stage.

So with the tent shut up, the walls get sucked in, even on the lowest speed setting. "What's with that curved exhaust duct?!" It's temporary. Right now I have it curved in such a way so as to blow air on my external probe thermometer. This way I can get a feel for what the air is like coming out of the tent. Which brings me to:

The temperature probe, which I've placed under a leaf. I guess this is a good spot to get a good reading because it's so close to the plant and the leaf shades it from the direct light. I've placed my first hygrometer about halfway up the tent to get a general reading for the grow area. I love Gorilla tents because of the viewing windows.

So there's the setup for now. I'd love some feedback or suggestions on how to do things better. And finally...

The plant! She seems happy so far. :)

Reading through this thread you never seem like a first timer to me, very well organized!
Gonna check in on you from time to time.
Best of Luck!

Hmm, Day 12's pictures didn't show up for me, so here they are again.
