I was wondering is it ok to breed seeds you buy at a seed bank or is that not cool?

I would think that if you bought a pig you could breed it( not literally :) would the same go with seed breeders?

Or is it ripping off their genetics? but I would think unless they went out and got their own landrace that they in turn used someone else's genetics at some point

I would love to hear from some of the seed breeders on this or any ones thoughts would be great.

Thanks!

If there is no patent there is no right on the genetics, the only thing you cant do is to use their name if you want to sell your produkt.

Everyone uses someone's seeds/cuts if breeding. Some breeders choose to keep their genetic lines secret in an attempt to keep others from recreating the same(as close to same as can be made) seed. Many breeders put their genetics out there for everyone to see. Most of the early breeders used cuts that had been preserved for years. You hear that still a lot on the West Coast with the Kush cuts. Another instance is the Strawberry Fields cut that Kushman used that was gifted to him.

Generally speaking, if you purchased the seed it is yours to do with as you want. If it was a gift or a trial from a breeder then, in my personal opinion, it is always best to follow the breeder's wishes on how he/she would like for those to be treated. Some will give you the go ahead and some may not. It is all personal opinion and more importantly for me, respect for someone's work. If I am going to use their genetics then I will give them credit for their work.

That is all just my opinion and in the end it comes down to your own conscience and what you believe is the right thing to do.

Sometimes names are copyrighted.

I agree with A4. I asked LBH what he thought about me reversing a SDH to pollinate one of my crosses an he give me his opinion,(To use a SDH for a mother)

I am currently growing one of the F1 fem. plants and it is looking very nice ..I am really happy with the little girl. I wanted to know if I reversed a Sour Diesel Haze Auto and pollinated one of my B.C. x C.D. F1 fem. plants do you think it would make a nice smoke.. I respect your opinion. Sour Diesel Haze is one of my favorite smokes and I would like to add it to my B.C. x C.D. cross. I hope you P.M. me and give me your opinion..... Thanks Boogieman... :smoke:

i wil use a mother SDH and reverse a reverderd BCXCD F1 cross

Well i would kindly ask the Breeders for Permission if You can use their Genetics. The badest case is they Say No, but if you want to use it for Personal use not for releasing it most will give You Permission to work with their Genetics. Personaly i had some good expierience with that Way.

once you pay for the seeds it its yours to do as you please.
If you spend significant amounts of time working the strain over generations to make it to your own preference then it is yours to do as you please including sell.
you would credit the original breeder but the strain is yours,

if you were selling them you would write up something like this eg AKnortherlights is a 4th gen auto developed by selectively breeding Sensi NL to f4 to achieve a tall single cola plant.

etc..

that would be my opinion on it and everybody gets the credit for their part.

Not to get too off topic but, selling and breeding livestock is serious business. If you buy an animal and you are not a registered breeder, usually they will spade or neuter the animal so you can't breed with it. A co-worked of mine raises and breeds sheep mostly out of hobby but told me he was offered a male for free because it was neutered, but if he wanted to buy a breeding ram it was over 5,000 usd

Also, I'm assuming most breeders are not sending their strains to be analyzed and broken down by DNA strands and to keep track of. Mostly just THC % if even that.

Monsanto has sued many farmers, and won each time, for replanting the progany of their GMO Roundup Herbicide resistant field crop seeds that the farmer paid Monsanto a pretty penny for.

Nobody "owns" any genetics and lets keep it that way or some day someone may decide they "own' YOURS and MY personal genetics! They can own the names as a trademark, but thats it, and even then, only if the copyrighted it. Asking to include their naming of a strain in your work however is good etiquette.
