I'm just a sprout, but it makes sense to me.
The essential idea is that if you set a DLI which is best for the plant, the plant will use a lower PPFD more efficiently. In their case it is lettuce which gets 12 dli either at 12/12 or other photoperiods up to 21/3. The lettuce gets significantly more growth on the longer photoperiod with lower PPFD.
I'm not sure I've come across this exact argument before. But again, I'm a sprout.
I'd be interested to hear any thoughts.
