I was thinking by end of summer I may have to cut the roots ball on my mother plants to control size(will have less need of clones after spring), I've never done it before. I was told lift root ball out and cut to a V shape and make sure to leave enough to support the vegation you have on plant.

Question: How do you know what is enough and what is to much to cut, is it just educated guess looking at full root ball and what you think taking clones has removed from plants ? Should I give it some B1 or hydro thives ?, do I feed less or feed more after cutting root ball ?

p.s. in no hurry for answers just looking mostly for advice and confidence to do it.

What you could do is foliar with kelp/fulvic plus a dose of b vitamins at the roots a few days before you trim the roots.

The few times I've trimmed roots in square pots I've removed 25%(4" tall pot square) from the bottom and each side, broken up the media and repotted in the same pot.

I would not cut more than 50%. Also read on creating bonsai mother plants.

I was reading a little on it, but they make it sound so easy online that it panicked me.
