A person here was talking about cutting some of his plant when it matured to energizing effects or cloudy Trichomes. He said he would cut the rest when it hit couchlock amber Trichomes. Can you do that? See the tall colas? The pistils are turning color. 60-40 orange I think. Below the short branches look mostly light green.
I have bud that has more amber than others as well. Does a plant normally mature like this with some branches slower than others?

Are their rules around what you can cut and not? This is my first and I am mostly curious. (I couldn't think of how I might search for this topic)

Would be considered a staggered harvest just trying the plant in different stages to see what works best. Also sometimes when plants are big the shaded stuff might need some extra time so partial harvest would give you more light to those areas.

Thanks. I have a small tent. 2 plants growing. I want to lay the colas on their side to open the canopy. That blocks light from my Tangerine Dream. So now that I am asking the question I am finding articles recommending this method to increase the weight of the buds not getting the light at the top. Mine started 11 weeks ago today from germination. It is still not ripe on the top buds but they are further along. This is what I just found: "
Ripe bud method
This is a more time-consuming method of trimming weed but can produce a higher yield with better bud quality. The outer buds mature first, so trimming weed when ripe requires you to work from the outside to the inside of the plant over time.

The other method is Whole Plant. From the pic, I have 4 sites to target if I see a difference in the timing of trichome maturity. OPTIONS!

Staggered harvest works just fine. The reason for not doing it is often that growers don't have independent space to dry in, so the chop has to be complete so they can use the grow tent as a drier.

You need to get a close look at the trichomes to determine ripeness though, and that requires magnification, as in 30X or preferably more. One limitation is that getting in that close to a growing plant can be a challenge - I eventually gave up on it with my loupe and Carson microscope. For most peeps, a wifi microscope supported on some sort of tripod or the like is the cheapest way to do the job reasonably well.

Good luck with it. :pighug:

I have buds with amber and without. That is what is prompting me to look harder at options. I have limited space for drying and the environments are not perfect. I want something slightly couchy.

I remove plants from the tent when watering, flushing, LSTing, defoliating. btw Started this to avoid gnats and keep the tent clean.

Ok, you seem to have the tools for checking. As I understand it, the next detail you need to be aware of is that you want to judge ripeness by the trichs on the calyxes, not the sugar leaves. Try to get a look at the calyxes specifically - these are the bulbous things that the amber pistils come out of. Another thing to keep in mind is that different strains behave differently, some are quite reluctant to amber up much, and can trick a grower into waiting too long while chasing more amber. Or so it has seemed for a couple of my strains, and so I have heard here on AFN.

Anyway, good luck with it, it looks as though you are getting close, so keep an eye on those trichs! Speaking of which, I need to check trichs on my cbd girls today. I am also getting close... :pighug:

I was watching this video on photoperiods:

Pretty neat. Get a second harvest, or start some clones, or bring a male plant in and obtain some seed. I don't think it will work with autos since they are on a clock.

Thank you. I just heard about checking the calyxes and I have started. They seem to be the hardest to focus in on. ;) Also, I have not noticed resin production on this plant until today. So I am thinking of a little more patience on my part. I took a small popcorn bud from the plant to examine tonight. I got a pretty good look at all of the big stuff. Also, I finally found glue. This is gorilla glue. I found several places where the branches have young leaves but the area felt like a sauna. As I was figuring it out I found my fingertips coated from those areas with rich aromas glue . I really appreciate everyone who has responded. Thank you.

Today. I took some leaves and one tiny bud to examine later. Also the pistils have turned quite a bit as compared to the pick above.
That little tiny guy in the lower center is what I took. Also all the buds in the center are now pretty well exposed to light. I can see even those are turning orange.

It may go fast now. Plain water, 750 ml today.

When you "examine" a bud you should get rid of it by smoking it. Or putting it in a the lowest temp your oven can go until it dries and see how it does in a vaporizer.
