Because of guys like
@hecno and
@Eyes on Fire , I've been doing some experimentation and trying to find an easier way, perhaps cheaper way to generate some new soil batches so that I won't have to ever buy soil again; just re-amend using homemade compost and eventually EWCs and possibly bokashi, but I'm not quite there yet.. Bags of the
OF go for $25-30 around here and it's nearly as much if I bought it on Amazon and had it shipped, and I would need volume.. Besides, the soil only has enough beneficial nutes for a month and maybe a week or 2, before it's gonna need supplementation.. It's a good base soil but if you're looking long-term, layering/blending the soil is where it's at!!! I remember a couple years back
OF had some inconsistencies and I'm not sure about them lately but I grew some veggies with some and they turned out well.. Apparently there were issues w/ the soil being too hot for seedlings/clones/autos from the start, and some folks had issues w/ pH shifts and such.. Like I said, no current knowledge on their soils, but from what they used to say was they were locally sourced, so they used stuff local to the region, allegedly..
Since you're in North America, Eyes on Fire has some of the best knowledge around with stuff you should be able to order or source out.. His threads are truly gold!!!
