Hello Stoners,

I did want to hang out tonight and have a bit of a chinwag, but DaddyP is not too good and it has been a bit of a bad day. His dementia has been shocking today, I hope you never have to deal with this awful disease. But, I wont let it get me down. We have a party to plan at the weekend and next month should be the fun Pirate Party Arghhhh . So get ready fro the plank walking and splicing the mainbrace (whatever that is) and any party poopers will be keel hauled.
You have been warned....See you soon my good chums, sleep well and don't inhale.

As if !!!

eP.

Oh here we go................good old search engines.......................

What is the origin of "Splicing the Mainbrace" in the Royal Navy? Do other Commonwealth countries also follow the tradition?

For many years the Royal Navy would issue a daily "rum-ration" which consisted of a tot of rum for every serving sailor. For Senior Rates (Petty Officer and above) it was served neat and for Junior Ratings it would be given as "grog" which is rum mixed with water.

Now, during the age of sail, when a ship came out of battle inevitably repairs needed to be made to the sails and rigging. The most challenging and dangerous job was that of "splicing the main brace", it was hard work, at height, with none of the Health and Safety fallbacks that we would have today. As a reward the seamen who did the task would be awarded a double portion of rum.

Over time, as sail was replaced with steam, the order "splice the mainbrace" came to mean an extra issue of rum to the ship's company. Once the rum ration was abolished in the 1970s (yes, the 1970s!) and tots were no longer issued it fell into infrequent use. Eventually it became a tradition and "splice the mainbrace" is now only ordered for occasions of great significance, such as the birth of royalty, the Queen's Jubilee and the Trafalgar 200 Fleet Review. Only the Queen or the Admiralty Board can order it.

Regarding our Commonwealth partners, I know Canada will splice the mainbrace, but I'm not sure about Australia (probably not; they're a "dry" navy) and New Zealand.
