My fave is the fall colors, so mid to late october. But it's also hard to get through the park then... That's where the local help comes in. I know every road for 500 miles diameter at least. I also really like mid spring (late april, early may for dogwoods). The park has the highest bio diversity in the States, and the spring show is pretty amazing.

edit: see if you can get a camp spot at Elkmont.

Another really good spot to go where the woods and roads are just as curvy and lush, but far less traffic than the park.

There are many great rides from there, into North Carolina, or East Tennessee. Could go to Hot Springs NC from there in 45 minutes and soak in the mineral springs, back to the campground and white water in the morning... for example.

I sent that to the boss, I'm sure she will figure something out but no way she will get that far without going to Nashville for a day or 2.
