Outdoor Cunning Outdoor Grow Idea?

I like the idea but I don't think it will get much direct sunlight other than at high noon. Stick a trash can outside and watch it during the day and see how long direct light is on the bottom of the can I bet it's not more than a couple of hours a day. The rest of the time it will be in part to full shade from the side of the can. Now if the can was 4 foot wide that would be a different story.

and don't flip of the chopper as it passes over...........LOL!

I know right ! I had a mate flip off the chopper, brown eyed them and all and then wonder why the ground force turned up and busted him lol When they flew over my place a few weeks ago I walked out the front and waved, smiled. One of the cops actually waved back at me, flew straight over the top of my auto garden and flew off, not to be seen again lol

So, I was musing to myself, wondering if only I could grow a plant outside...I mean, just ONE plant outdoors would be an awesome supplement to my box, and two a year would be even better. I could probably manage it during the grow season. I'm not sure how comfortable I feel planting in the soil around here, but that got me thinking...nobody finds a big black trash can outside suspicious, right?

What if I spray painted the inside of a big, 55 gallon can white, filled the bottom with like 6 gallons of soil (after drilling holes for drainage), and planted a plant or two? I'm in an apartment complex on the top floor, so I don't have to worry about people on the street or the like looking in, and I could throw the lid on when I need absolute secrecy.

Does this seem like a sound idea? Crazy? Stupid? I'm just debating whether or not to consider going for it, as one nice hefty harvest would be a huge help to my needs.

Anyone who can pull off a cunning stunt becomes a stunning c _ _ _ !

I think this would work, you wont get the yield you would indoors, but I would use a pot inside the can, then you could put something under the pot to lift it closer to the rim of the can and it would a lot more sun. You can lower it as the plant grows to keep it just a couple inches below the rim of the can. Paint it white, dont bother with mylar. Drill some holes in the can so air flows through but people cant really see inside. Dont do a really large plant, do something that you know wont get more than 24 inches tall. You could also put some kind of privacy fence around your balcony. If you cant get the plant more than 6 hours of direct sun a day, it probably wouldnt be worth the hassle/risk.

Lift the north aide of the can. Put a brick under it to angle better to the sun. Always treat those choppers nice. They dont care about one plant.

Croaker, you might save the can for flowering and consider greenhousing it in veg with a drycleaners or other clear poly bag over a frame. Once the bag fogs up you have to be on top of it to notice what is in it most of the time and it's good for the plant. A handful of fake grape tomatos hung will show through to satisfy the curious at a glance.

You are right if they have altitude. It was my luck they were running the coast at about 100 feet and I'm sure they didn't come back for another look at me or to see what book I was reading. Low chopper traffic is a daily occurrence over the coast, especially by beaches of the nudy kind. I can't but if I said where I lived you would recognize instantly.
Mine didn't even look anything like normal plants as they had been topped and trained to run along the railing of the deck. Picture a menorah but with more candles. I'm not saying it isn't a good diversion, just that it won't fool everybody.

I just smiled back.

Also, thats why I went with a small, cheap, greenhouse. Keeps all peepers from getting a look...lol1
