Outdoor Crow's GG at 56ºN

A fortnight has passed since I was last at the embankment plot. I brought some chicken manure to help sustain the girls in this wet weather. Also some bonemeal for any that are in flower. On arrival it was clear that the @Sawney_bean autos had suffered. The two Small Lecter had been munched to within an inch of their lives by slugs. Almost no leaves left on either of them.
:(
The SOS don't seem to have been munched at all, but one had been dug up, maybe by a fox. It was lying in its fibre pot, on its side, half under the Joshua clone. Otherwise unharmed, so I replanted the wee girl. All the other girls are doing fine. All except the Joshua clone look a bit hungry and pale, and all but the Joshua clone are still in veg. I weeded around the plants, and top dressed the Joshua clone with bonemeal. All the other girls except the autos were top dressed with chicken manure. They are all getting taller, the rain seems to have brought the soil to life and the girls are looking pretty healthy, if a bit pale. Hopefully the chicken manure will help with that. I'll be back after another fortnight to see how they are getting on.

Thought it may be appropriate to give some feedback to @Sawney_bean on the strains I have grown outdoors so far, all in one place so it's handy.

Nightmare

Grown in two locations, with different starts. One was planted out third week of May, the other early June (in full flower already). Both performed well, decent yield though some rot on lower buds. The girls were tested by conditions and weather and with a drier summer would probably do better. A strain that can definitely work outside and will grow outdoors again no problem. :greenthumb:

Slaughtered Lamb

Just planted one tester of this strain in third week of May. Unfortunately May was unusually cold and wet. Perhaps the conditions didn't suit her, but the plant stayed very small and yielded next to nothing. Maybe stunted? No rot, but this feels more like an indoors strain, or one to grow in a warmer climate. Might work in a greenhouse, maybe I'll try that approach next season.

SOS

So far, so good with this strain. Three girls planted outdoors third week of July, and another two in a different location end of July. A few still to go out. A fortnight on, two girls are doing fine and proving resilient outside. Slugs and pests don't seem to like them. We'll see how they get on but they are growing well up to this point, one has doubled in size in two weeks. Temperatures have been reasonably warm so that may have helped. Looking very promising.

Small Lecter

One girl planted outdoors third week of July, and another two in a different location end of July. Some still to go out. This strain seems to be very delicious to slugs, two girls almost killed by munching, I hope to discover the fate of the other one soon. It will be interesting to see if the damaged girls recover or not, that would be a true test of outdoor resilience. Early days yet, so the jury still out on this strain for growing outside.

I will continue to report on the last two strains as they flower and finish later in the year. Probably late September harvest assuming they survive. It will be an interesting test of how they stand up to the Scottish early autumn weather!

This afternoon, I took the Triton Biscotto Lime mum down to the bramble plot to plant out. I was apprehensive about the girls there, given they were looking hungry last visit. I needn’t have worried. The rain over the past two weeks seems to have delivered the fertiliser top dressed last time. They’re all looking very healthy. Even the Super Kush mum is recovering from her near death experience - a tough girl indeed!

After planting the final arrival, I weeded around the plot and then top dressed with chicken manure and coco coir, plus bonemeal for any flowering girls, before mulching with straw. The idea is that it will help retain moisture, and stop the soil drying out so much. With a few dry days ahead, the timing is good.

I’m pretty pleased with how the girls are getting on now. All three Guerrilla Gold Pie Fast are in flower, and the Joshua mum is just starting to throw more pistils out. The tallest plants are around 150cm high, and presumably will grow a bit more over the next month or so. They are all bushing out too, so the plot is starting to look quite full… 😊

I’ll be back in a fortnight to check on them, and I will bring some tubs to pick brambles as they are ripening nicely and there are thousands!

This afternoon I visited the railway, with two objectives. First I wanted to check on the girls, see if any were finishing up. Second I had two @Sawney_bean autos to plant out.

The Fast Serious 6 Glue is 106 days old, and nearly done. Unfortunately there was some rot on the very top of the main cola, maybe just been a bit too wet. I removed the topmost bud, cut out the rotten bit, discarded and bagged the rest. I left the remaining majority of buds to cook a bit longer, will come back in a week or so to harvest. Looking at the Joshua clone, she seems nearly ready too. Will double check next visit, might harvest, might leave a bit longer. She has been munched somewhat by slugs and insects but shrugging it off. C99 x Blueberry EV still in veg, a bit taller and bushing out too.

Further along the line, the last Short Term Amnesia, also 106 days old. was ready to chop. This girl turned out quite well, the early munching gave me five tops instead of one. There were still some white pistils on a couple of tops but overall she seemed ripe. Some leaves nibbled by slimy creatures, and after harvest I noticed a tiny bit of rot on one bud. Bit of a surprise that. I removed that small area before bagging the rest of the plant. Dug over the planter with a hand fork, then planted two @Sawney_bean autos which are just about to flower. One is definitely an SOS, but label missing on the other so not sure, could be an SOS or a Small Lecter. Healthy enough both of them. I didn't bother with slug collars this time, we'll see how they get on.

Finally went further along to the four @Sawney_bean autos in the large round planter. Unfortunately something has been munching these girls. There were also signs an animal had been digging in the soil. Not clear if the munching and digging are connected. Haven't seen any rabbits along the line, but it might be that. Or it could just be slimy beggars, and maybe a fox wanted to eat those creatures and was digging for them. One SOS was so badly munched I doubt she'll recover. The other three have been pruned back severely, but otherwise probably okay. We'll see how things go I suppose, not a lot I can do just now.

So a bit of a mixed bag overall, some positives, some negatives. That's the way it goes...

Went to check on the Ducksfoot girls today.

The lowers on the big Auto Duck by the apple tree were ready, so I chopped her. Found one tiny spot of rot on a smaller bud, removed and then bagged the rest. Frankly I'm surprised she didn't suffer more, the proper outdoors seems to suit this strain very well.

The two hidden Auto Duck are pretty much ready. One has begun to fade visibly, she is now shaded for much of the day. The other, larger one gets more sun and leaves are not fading yet. They're both 107 days old, but given their environment I'll let them have another week before chop. Possibly a bit longer for the bigger girl.

That's the first wave of autos nearly all finished. Will definitely be growing Ducksfoot autos again next season, very hardy.

Harvesting the big girl by the tree allowed me to move the Frisian Duck mum into position ready for ScrOG net training. I set up the mesh, and tucked a few of the tallest tops. A new adventure begins in outdoor ScrOG!

Harvested the final two Auto Duck this evening at 114 days old. I could have left the bigger of the two to cook for a bit longer, but decided to take her before mould or rot started. One small spot of mildew on the smaller girl was removed. Nothing on the bigger girl. She did quite well, though with both plants the cages seemed to constrain their sidewards branching. I will probably use that spot again where the bigger girl was, it gets more sun than where the smaller girl grew. Maybe with a perimeter fence instead of cages. Then I might be able to fit two or three autos in there and they can spread their side branches if they want.

The Frisian Duck is growing steadily, so more tucking was in order. Plenty of room on the screen for her to move sideways. If she gets a lot bigger I suppose I can add another screen above this one. Currently just a wee tuck once a week seems enough. I like a bit of a ScrOG, it's a nice gentle way to train a plant.
