What is Indica? What is sativa? Those are made up terms mostly, they don't really have any pharmacological meaning, and most cannabis available these days is a hybrid anyway. Even 'classic landrace' strains are turning out to be anything but now that we have genomics at our disposal.

Dose and tolerance are also likely at play. There are a variety of effects cannabis can produce, and the terpenes and flavonoids definitely color the experience. The sedative or stimulatory effects are almost certainly a byproduct of terpenes, but the psychoactive constituents of cannabis are relatively limited, and mostly it's delta-9 THC.
I will note that after smoking n,n-DMT I had several experiences with cannabis where I saw open eyed visuals, but I also had some DMT flashbacks in dreams totally sober. I think people who have had strong visual hallucinations on other drugs can evoke the memories of those visuals on large doses of cannabis or when dreaming. If the person claiming to have smoked 'trip weed' has also taken shrooms, LSD, DMT, Salvia, or 2CB, I would take their claims about cannabis with a grain of salt.
