before I ask this question I want you guys to know I did use the search button first with no success.

do carbon filters work properly in unsealed environments? for instance, if I'm growing it in a basement 10 to 15 plants with a carbon filter in there, will it keep the smell from reaching outside or does the area have to be sealed off and more controlled.

A spare room would be another example to apply my question to, can these plants just grow freely with a carbon filter in the room or do I have to control the air I'm not sure how a carbon filter works never even seen one.

talk to me AFN

It will work if sized properly. You need to calculate the cubic feet of the room by measuring length x width x height. Like a 10x10x10 would be 1000 cubic feet. Find a filter that will handle 12-1500 cubic feet and make sure it is rated for the cfm of the fan as well. You don't want to push 500cfm through a filter rated for 350. It won't work as well and won't last as long.

Since we are on this topic you could save me some research A4 lol. If you are going the diy route is there an equation for how much carbon weight to use per cubic foot and surface area of filter?

Hey nater, man I am DIY all day long but that beats the hell outta me. I would guess it has to do with surface area of the carbon. I have also read that some carbon is much better than others. Supposedly Australian carbon is far superior so maybe you could use less but honestly man, that is just all guessing. As much as they cost, it probably is a good idea to do DIY if you can. I suppose you could always just buy a sack and test it out.

No worries, I thought I would spend more time on here with Winter in full swing but it seems I am finding every reason I can to stay in my grow room. The light makes me happy like my plants!
