Hi everyone! I am in the process of setting up my new grow tent. I have a 4” fan and carbon filter I will need to install. I should have plenty of floor space for the filter to stand. My question is would I be better off buying some straps and hanging it up high or will it be just as effective on ground level? If anyone could share some info It would be a huge help.

Some more info, I am using COBS so heat won’t be much of an issue. My main concern is the smell

I think it's personal preference. I hung mine at the top of tent as it's shorter distance to my exhaust vent outside.

I think the only issue is if you let it stand rather than be horizontal is that the carbon starts to compact and not be as useful.

Here's a thought - a lot of filters perform better over time when rotated every 30-60 days (the carbon settles becoming denser at the bottom). If the filter is on the floor then rotation becomes a moot point unless you invert the whole assembly.

I use a 4" RhinoPro located vertically in the corner of my grow and it started getting a bit whiffy (Sour Hound and Sour Stomper) were souring the house out after 18 months (still warrantied) and I ended up taping off the top couple of inches where the less dense carbon was and that sorted the problem. So while location may not be an issue for you I would still recommend keeping the orientation horizontal to make rotation meaningful.

@Samwell - You beat me to it. lol

I didn’t think about the carbon settling. That’s a really good point. Looks like I will be hanging it up near the top of the tent

When my fan/filter was inside my tent, I always hung at top with bungee cords. I believe that is best location. My fan/filter has been outside my tent for a long time now.

Another factor to consider is where your air intakes are, ie. you don't want a situation where air has a direct path from intake to out-take - air should ideally flow from bottom to top (where generally its DAMN HOT - but since bigD is using COBs if the ambient temperature is too low perhaps the airflow should be reversed and warmer air drawn down from the COBs via the normal out-take and then out thru an intake at the bottom.

I suppose it all depends on location. I have a friend who does garage grows - and it's a case of LEDs in summer to keep temps down and HPS in winter to keep temps up. I would suggest just trying out different locations to see what suits you best.

I normally have always hung my filters. Intake down low, filter up top. Hot air rises, why fight it?
For this grow, with two autocobs, and a 150HPS, I need to retain heat, to get me through the night, so the filter and fan sits on the floor.
Additionally, my filter is too big to hang, so when summer comes, I will build an external plenum box for the fan and filter, and extract from the top of the tent with 4" ducting.
Not the most efficient way to run the show, but even with a 4" fan, I have a very good amount of airflow to play with, in a 3x3 tent.
Regards, Kyle
